Game ended in a 14-14 tie that felt like a loss. Since Alabama kinda dominated every one in the 1970s the losing streak at home to them was really just starting to be a big deal. This was bone crushing.

Wow. I was at that game as a student. He was booed and when he made a FG in that next game at home, he flipped the bird to the student section.
Brings back good memories. Not of that game, but just being at LSU.

I was at both of those games. He was booed most of the rest of the year.

1985. LSU was 9-1-1 that year, if only Ronnie Lewis had made that kick LSU would've won the SEC, gone to the Sugar Bowl and got creamed by Miami(?) like they lost big to Nebraska the year before. Nevertheless, it was a great time to be a Tiger!

I was there. Bama scored a late TD to tie it. Mike Shula was their QB. On the KO we ran a nifty reverse that worked for a good return. Made a few more plays that set us up for what should've been the winner.
Arnsparger years were plagued by short missed FGs that would have won games:
'84 vs UF, Betanzos 21-21 tie
'85 vs Bama , Lewis 14-14 tie
'86 vs OM, Browndyke 19-21 loss

Ridiculous. Damian Ramos is Garo Yepremian compared to Ronnie Lewis, or for that matter, Wade Richey or Juan Betanzos or any number of failed kickers of past LSU teams.
Damian Ramos isn't even on the Top Ten list of problems with this year's team.

Ronnie Lewis said he was just waving to the crowd

The uncomplimentary hand gesture was the following season in the Miami Ohio fiasco.
That 1985 Alabama game was painful. Had it won, 14-7 but they made a 4th and 19 conversion and then did a halfback pass to Mike Shula to make it 14-13. That would have been a great two point play but they kicked to tie.
I think it was Garry James and Dalton Hilliard did some handoff on the kickoff and ran it to at least midfield. LSU moved right down and should have tried for a TD as Alabama was gassed.

I was there as a 15 year old. Was pissed when he missed it

I was there. From where I sat, it looked like the field goal split the uprights. We celebrated briefly, until the referee signaled that it missed. Yes, that was a crushing loss.

Geezum. I was there in the student section. I watched it happen.
And now I feel very old.

You must’ve been near me in the North EZ because I saw the exact same thing.

Ugh, unfortunately I was there. Probably my least favorite game of all time, for more reasons than one.

Browndyke did redeem himself in 1988 in Tucsaloosa.

That's what I thought too, from a vantage point in the SE part of the stadium near the endzone. Only realized he missed it when Lewis lowered his head with his hands on the helmet. One painful experience as a fan, in fact one of the worst. LSU fans had so much more pride in their team back then.

Or they might have creamed Miami because Tennessee routed Miami in that Sugar Bowl.
