Not sure if anybody keeps up with Southland Conference football but Nicholls State has had a resurgence under this kid. Went to Thibodaux High and now is quarterbacking the colonels. Replaced a transfer QB after a lack luster 1-6 start and now got the Kerns on a heater winning 2 in a row by a combined score of 62-14. Wonder if the Lions are on upset alert for the riverbell classic at the end of the month

Simmer down buddy. They beat up on the 88th and 111th out of 129 teams in FCS.

They will lose to UTRGV and then beat up on an atrocious NWSU before SLU crushes them for the Riverbell on way to a top 8 seed.

This is no disrespect to Nicholls, and maybe its a regional thing, but NSU is Northwestern State. I dont think ive ever seen anyone refer to Nicholls as NSU.

I have seen both abbreviations used interchangably at many times throughout the years in athletics. But the preference has always been Nicholls State University 1st reference and 2nd reference just Nicholls. As far as Northwestern, 1st reference is Northwestern State University and 2nd reference Northwestern State. But Northwestern guide states that NSU is permissible as a 3rd reference.

This is from the NIcholls Branding Webpage:
quote:

For consistency, please refer to the university as:

Nicholls State University: on first reference
Nicholls: on subsequent references
Please DO NOT refer to Nicholls State University as:

NSU
Nicholls State

Here is Northwestern State's Style Guide:
quote:

The official name of the institution is “Northwestern State University of Louisiana,” which historically predates the creation of the
current University of Louisiana System. The enabling legislation from the early 20th century which first changed the name to Northwestern State College of Louisiana was replaced on June 18, 1970, with the naming of Northwestern State University of Louisiana. On
all formal documents, the full name of the institution should be employed, along with the formal official seal. In general publicity and
documents, the first reference is Northwestern State University, with second reference as Northwestern State. The short abbreviation
of NSU is permissible as a third reference.
“Northwestern,” “Northwestern Louisiana”, and “NW State” should not be used in university
publicity, printed materials or official documents as a reference.

Now when Northwestern State and Nicholls do play each other, it used to be called the battle of NSU and the winner would get bragging rights to use NSU for the next year.

As far as athletics, ESPN uses NICH for Nicholls and NWST for Northwestern State on their box scores.
