Advocate for 2 star: I think entering college it is to early to label these kids ability. They are still growing and with Good weight training, excellent coaching and a great supporting cast can easily become a superstar. I wish the NFL had a record of all players and what their star rankings were when they entered college. Finally I point to the University of Utah to back up this claim.

sure, they can but there are hundreds and hundreds 2 stars every year compared to 25 or so 5 star guys. the odds are overwhelmingly in favor of the 5 star recruit being the star, not the scrub 2 star guy.

for every jacob hester who play key roles on championship teams, theres hundreds of 2 star guys who never see the field on decent to bad teams

ultimately, the numbers game doesnt work with the 85 man schollie limit. if you expect to sign 25 2 star guys who are all diamonds in the rough.... well- you wont be coaching very long

Not very easily. I think getting too hung up on stars is retarded, but I think any sort of scientific and objective analysis would tell you a much higher % of 5-stars turn out to be All-Americans and NFLers than 2 stars. An easy way to tell is that the schools who are usually at the top of the recruiting rankings are typically the ones at the top of the real ones as well.

Of the 31 players drafted in the first round, 15 arrived at college with the coveted four or five star label. On the other hand, 16 first round draftees were given three-star rankings or lower, and as such, were likely ignored when they made their college choices.
so its pretty even: 15/31 were 4 stars or better. so sounds equal, but you have to remember how many more 3 stars and worse there are every year

You point to Utah, I point to Hawaii.

Utah was a good team that was fired up after Saban's dumbass comments. They beat an overrated Bama team after having 6 weeks of off time.

Put them in the SEC week in, week out and those 2 star athletes are going to win less than 50% of their conference games.

2 star teams- Minnesota, Iowa State, Washington State, Central Florida.

5 star teams- USC, LSU, OSU, Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma.

You might could argue there's no way to predict 4 star athletes vs 5 star ones, but there's a marked difference between 2 star and 5 star.

You mention that "2 star athletes are still growing". Does this mean 5 star athletes won't continue to improve?

Is it just a coincidence that all the latest NC's are teams with good recruiting years featuring mostly 4 & 5 star recruits.

I'll give you a team with 25 2 stars and I'll take 25 5 stars. We'll play 10 games and see who wins the majority. I like my chances.

No based on the rating system a 5 star can only not meet expectations and be considered below par.

It's only a debate and maybe I should have said all stars other than 5. I agree with you.

One thing to remember is how many players are rated 5 stars each year? Very limited.

No, they can't. A few do, but not "very easily". Normally, the under the radar guys (that are low ranked but emerge as All-Conf and higher) are 3 stars. You very rarely see 2 stars do this.
