A Democrat mayor has abandoned his party to launch a bid for mayor as an independent candidate.
Mike Duggan, who has been a Democrat for 40 years, said he was leaving the party because its only line of attack was being negative about the Republicans.
Mr Duggan announced he would run as an independent candidate to replace Gretchen Whitmer in Michigan, weeks after Kamala Harris lost the swing state to Donald Trump.
In his three terms as the mayor of Detroit, Mr Duggan, 67, is widely credited with reducing crime and reversing an exodus of residents in a city that previously had the highest homicide rate in the nation.

Maybe this mayor realizes they wouldn’t get reelected as a Dem. We need to be careful of who we are supporting on “our side”

He's the mayor of Detroit, I am guessing he'd get re-elected as a Dem. He's switching because he wants to run for governor. And if he was able to unfrick Detroit even a little he'd be better than Whitmer.

It may be a trap, but it also may help keep the batshit crazy side of the left from winning governor - does MI have a runoff law where someone has to win 50% + 1?
