My Grandson has expressed interest in getting into golf. He is 13 . He’s on the smaller side. I don’t want to get him a set of junk. Any recommendations? Thanks

Get used game improvement set - cobras from 2-3 years ago would be perfect then invest in high end individual lessons - then let his coach tell him when new clubs are needed

There's a lot of affordable pre owned stuff out there. Might could find an older set for a good price and have them cut down and regripped if needed.

At 13, most clubs should be ok on length.
Sawing clubs off is not a great idea unless you truly understand how to do it and move weight around with lead tape and such.
If he’s 5’5” or above, I’d just get R flex standard loft/lie/length.

I am thinking about going with the Costco clubs for my 13 year old. They seem pretty legit.

I would like to keep it around 250 . I want to make sure he sticks with it before dropping $$

That's going to be tough, $250 is what a good used driver would cost. It can be done because I spent about that much on a set for my son when he started but they were old the original Ping Eye irons 40 years old, a scratched up Mizuno driver a pretty beat up 3 wood and some used wedges, I had a putter. They were pretty much junk but cheap. You said in your original post that you didn't want junk so if that's the case you're going to have to spend more than $250. Golf is very expensive, my whole bag was over $3000. New drivers are $600, it has gotten ridiculous. You should be able to get a whole descent used set used clubs bag and all for under $750. Try Facebook marketplace as well, there are some good deals out there, you just have to be patient and look. Good luck

Ping prodigy is a good set for a 13 year old who hasn't hit their growth spurt yet. There's plenty of used options on a site like 2nd swing.

Thanks for the input. Pretty sure I’m gonna find a used set that isn’t beat up . Seeing a lot of FB Marketplace.

You can have 14 clubs in the bag, but you can certainly learn to play with 9 clubs
Necessities:
Driver
Putter
A good hybrid or fairway wood
6 iron through Pitching wedge(5 clubs)
A good 54 degree wedge
I play with less than 14 in the winter IF they won’t let me roll my pushcart.
Score about the same.

Ping prodigy is a good starter set, kinda depends on his size as well

My daughter started at age 12 and I got her Ping Prodi G set of irons 7-9, PW and SW, FW, and Driver. She was 5’ tall and about 98 lbs. Spent about $1100 for everything.
They were great clubs for her 1st year. She immediately went into to junior tournament play and used them for 22 tournaments and a year of range and course practice. Once she hit 5 2” they were a little short and I added 1/2” length. Used another couple of months and when she reached 5 3”, I sold them and got her standard length TM irons and Hybrids. She just turned 15 and is 5 6”. Now she has the TM QI35 Max Lite driver and 3 wood and 4 Vokey wedges.
The Prodi G set is really good up to about 5 2” and 5 3” height. If your son is taller than that, just go standard men’s shaft length.

He is my grandson and he is currently 5’2”. Thanks

He would have maybe 6 months to a year before he outgrows them. When she got 5’ 3”, I sold them to a neighbor in my S/D who was starting his 12 year old son in golf for $500 so re-sell value is pretty good.
