Thinking about getting my son a 3d printer for Christmas. Would probably want to stay under $300 if that’s doable for something decent. Are there options out there that can be run off of a
iPad?

Sketchup app. Test the waters by going to a library or maker group that has a printer and let the kid see what is up.

We got the toy box one last year, around the same age, it was just ok, the builds are hard to put together bc the knobby parts used to connect them don’t always print correctly. He made a few small things when he first got it but hasn’t used it at all in months
It has a lot of content but their “printer food” is expensive and the builds all require additional costs to download

Yeah that toy box looks like a pretty terrible deal. $11 for a 1/2 lb proprietary roll of PLA is a major rip when the rest of the 3D printing world is paying like ~$15 for 2.2lbs of PLA. And you have to pay for the models?
Bambu A1 + MakerWorld free models + ~$15 for 2.2lbs PLA

Follow up questions:
Would the A1 mini be ok as a starter??
Regardless, would it be best to get the combo sign the AMS kit?

Go ahead and spend the extra money to get the A1 with the AMS. Buy once, cry once. The size of the A1 combined with the AMS is an amazing printer that is good to go for awhile.
Cryo Grip Glacier plate to go with it will ensure they have successful prints.
