The NCAA Division I Administrative Committee on Wednesday adopted a proposal to allow student-athletes and athletic department staff to bet on professional sports, a shift in a long-held policy that had become difficult to enforce with the spread of legal sports betting in the United States.

Divisions II and III are expected to consider the proposal in their respective meetings at the end of October, the NCAA said. If approved by the lower divisions, the rule would go into effect Nov. 1.

Athletes and athletic staff have been prohibited from betting on any sport, professional or collegiate, that was sponsored by the NCAA. Betting on college sports will remain off limits.

The potential change comes as the NCAA has faced an increasing number of alleged betting violations by student-athletes in recent years.

Not sure how this could have been legal for NCAA to do. Courts would have knocked it down soon if NCAA didnt

No way that 18-22 year olds won’t find a way for this to bleed into their own sport, or other NCAA sports. No way they start harassing fellow students about blowing their parlay.

Like pretty much every move the NCAA has made in recent history, this will be fumbled and bumbled and will have tons of foreseen consequences.

Are they going to require them to turn in all bets to NCAA to keep them honest?

I don’t know the details. I briefly heard about it on the radio today.

But I thought college athletes won’t be able to bet on college sports? Just pro?

How in any way will this be policed? With a VPN and some burner email account, you can probably bet on whatever you want. Or you just find your buddy who isn’t on the team and have him place whatever bets you want, just like an old school bookie.

Gambling is embedding its roots in the younger generation, and it’s probably a bad thing sports has sold its soul to the almighty dollar.

Too many people are violating the rules, so let’s make it legal.

Most of them are going to bet through a bookie anyway. It’s much less visible. That bookie isn’t going to give a shite what they’re betting on.

If a college athlete is betting enough on anything that a bookie is uncomfortable with the juice then the problem has already jumped the shark.

Most of them aren’t going to bet.

There’s zero logical reason to let legal adults bet legally on sports. Other than it aggrieves some dude in Livingston Parish who’s never going to hear about it again after this article

So if I was grinding away at the gym daily and sitting in the lower bowl each weekend, does that validate my opinion?

You guys harp on the changing times, and how the old way was unfair, but at the same time embrace the antiquated idea that these kids are mature as adults at the age of 18.

Guess what, that has also changed. If you think it’s a good idea to have college athletes betting, then great. It’s just a money grab by the powers that be. They WANT these kids betting, because they are loaded with NIL bucks now.

The news is constantly headlined by 18-22 year old college athletes rich with NIL money continuously doing dumb shite. It’s a problem at every school. These kids are going to follow the path laid before them by many pro athletes and will parlay themselves into being broke, and in turn, leaching off of people like you. Try looking at the big picture for a change.

You can’t gamble at 18.

If you’re too stupid to recognize this, you don’t get to have an opinion

We should demonetize YouTube and tic tok and Instagram until you reach a certain age. It’s in the best interest of the kids.

Do you not see how fricking stupid that sounds?

Yes you can, just not legally. Again, bookies don’t care about any of that.

So what’s the difference between them breaking the law now or breaking the law once this rule is changed?

Zero logic from you retards in this thread

I guess I assumed everyone here was smart enough to realize breaking the law was still against the rules.

And for that Mingo regrets the error. I forgot you have to explain it at a toddler level for you idiots to understand

For sure. You also have to be 18 to view porn, and it’s regulated by a link you click on a website.

I never said 18 was legal gambling age. I said it was legal adult age. If you think this doesn’t make it easier for some freshman wide receiver to gamble, you are a fool. All they have to do is find a teammate with an online account and have him place some bets.

Whataboutism. This is irrelevant to the topic.
