In a striking move to protect Los Angeles’ water supply, officials released 96 million black “shade balls” into the Ivanhoe Reservoir. These hollow plastic spheres serve a vital environmental purpose: they block sunlight from penetrating the water’s surface, which helps prevent the formation of bromate—a carcinogenic compound that can develop when sunlight reacts with naturally occurring bromide and chlorine used for disinfection. The shade balls also reduce evaporation and deter wildlife, making them a cost-effective and innovative solution for water conservation and safety.

They are putting plastic balls in the water supply... sunlight and warmth does bad things to plastic.

Those black balls also absorb heat, don't know if they realize that or not.

They will rub together and the friction will create "micro plastics" in the water.
