Seems like we had a plan for Clemson QB but not Ole Miss QB. Where was Perkins? Hope they go back to the way Perkins was used G1 against Clemson. That worked out pretty well. We are going to need that type of plan for USCe QB.

Folks acting like a spy is the be all and end all, hell man...it never worked against Jayden. If the running QB is good he can still make a good defender miss in the open field.

And when you have a dedicated spy you do compromise other things. My choice would be to spy on occasion just to let them know and keep it in their heads.

When you have a competent running qb it’s 11 vs 12

And when you don't it's 9 blocking 11.

This is the third year in a row that we watch our DC successfully scheme Perkins out of a game plan by constantly putting him in coverage.

This is one of many reasons I still have ZERO faith in this entire coaching staff. We have an elite defense. We saw for four games how to use them. Then, suddenly we change it for three quarters and watch an inferior team literally run the same 4-5 plays over and over and get close to 500 yards.

Turns out Ole Miss runs a lot of designed QB runs with a lead blocker to take care of a spy.

it did seem like 33 and 40 were spying more than Perk

33 was in position to make a play several times but didn't have the athleticism to execute.

We decided to have keys or west w on the field same time as whit and perk, instead of an extra safety. That pushed Perkins into coverage oh most plays. West struggled mightily and he and keys are too slow to cover anyone, let alone stop a dual threat.

And when he finally does make a play, he talks shite, steps over the player, or pushes the QB late and draws a flag. It is beyond maddening to watch it happen and you know it is going to happen again. When it does, it will lead to another key touchdown in a close game.

You mean the guy picked as a preseason all american that cannot average 2 solo tackles per game? What a joke. Complete waste of money.

Hard to believe people are this stupid, but here we are.

What do you want Perk to do? Play out of position? He was schemed out of the game. Thats on Baker, not Perk. Kiffin won that battle.

In hindsight, what should have happened was we move to a traditional nickel with Spears in Perk's spot and have Perk move down to LB and take 33's spot and take spy responsibilities.
The fact that didnt happen at halftime is kinda troubling.

Baker knew we could contain Klubnik (who isn’t nearly and fast) and their WRs without having to play 2 Safeties back at all times. When they wanted Perkins to be able to roam, we either brought a Safety down to play coverage in place of him, or played Dime and moved him inside. Clemson was set up perfectly for us to be able to use Perkins in multiple ways.

Ole Miss is a different animal with Chambliss and his speed. They have some big play WRs and will take shots, so we kept 2 Safeties back for most of the game. That means Perkins has to either play in coverage or we have to play Dime. But they actually run more than pass, especially with Chambliss, so you can get torched playing Dime or Nickel with Perkins moved inside. Some of you seem to forget that Perkins has never looked very good playing inside when he has to face the run.

That was the issue. They forced Baker to either take risks or play Perkins more in coverage, and Baker chose to be more conservative.

The bigger issue wasn’t not spying with Perkins. It was that we didn’t play particularly well in Zone, which we likely used to keep more eyes facing the LOS and containing Chambliss, and that we didn’t use Keys more than West Weeks inside working on the QB.

The only other team on our schedule who can likely force us to play this way with their talent and speed at QB is A&M. We’ll see how Baker chooses to use Perkins in that game.

But he doesn’t have multiple big play WR threats and a balanced run game like Ole Miss does. Neither does Vandy. That makes it easier for Baker to focus on the QB and give them a lot of different looks.

And he’s not as quick as Chambliss if you can keep him contained. He’s got to get into the open to get up to speed.
