Answer: Chinese made. The immediate red flag is that "Matsato" can't be formed in Japanese... there's a tsu sound but not a tsa sound in Japanese.
Search question: Are Matstato knives actually Japanese?
"No, Matsato knives are not authentically Japanese, and claims that they are traditional Japanese kitchen knives are misleading. While the knives are inspired by Japanese craftsmanship and may be marketed with Japanese-style branding, they are primarily manufactured in China by a Lithuanian company. Reviews and customer feedback suggest they offer decent value for the price but are not comparable to genuine, premium Japanese knives."

I got this set and they've been really good for me, especially for the price. I have some Wusthoffs as well, but Dexters are my everyday. These are also forged German stainless.

Go look on on chefknivestogo. Tons a Japanese gyutos etc. They work directly with a lot of the bladesmiths. Tons of info on their message board.
That is if you want an authentic Japanese made knife. I have several from the site.
