The Sam Houston Tollway is getting this bridge over the Houston Ship Channel for $1 billion dollars.
Lake Charles is getting this for $2.3 billion.
Can anyone explain this?

Meanwhile in Baton Rouge…
A new offramp and merge system off the BR bridge would only take 1/2 mile of new elevated highway to fix.
It's ridiculous that problem still exists after all these years.

This for Mobile, including the updated Bayway, both 3 lanes each way, for $3.7 billion.
Looks like cable stays are “in” right now

Legit question... why does y'all's cable stay bridge cost 5 times more than our cable stay bridge?

Pretending like this is a serious question, it's because, despite how much shitting on Texans is a state-wide pastime, Texas is a functioning state.
That LC bridge is terrible. It looks like someone asked a mentally handicapped kindergartner to draw birthday cupcakes. Shame on whoever chose that design.

One word in the difference in cost.
Inflation and changes in construction design
The Sam Houston Bridge project has been under plans, bids, and construction since 2018, and was affected and delayed by the bridge fiasco in Miami. That added 300 million to the original 1 billion dollar price tag.
In many cases, once a project bid is awarded, many contractors will lock in the material cost with suppliers even if prices do rise, so either the supplier or contractor has to eat some of the cost.
So yes we are getting a raw deal on new bridge projects.
Heck I remember the LA 1 bridge project in Fourchon for anticipated to cost 160 million dollars to go from Leeville to Fourchon. The cost ballooned to 240 million after Ivan then to over 300 million after Katrina.
The section under construction between Golden Meadow and Leeville is 450 million that will only go 9 miles.
This cost is pale in comparison to 46 million dollars for the lake pontchartrain causeway at 24 miles in 1956. That would be like spending over 400 million today, but some of the price change is due to changes in construction methods and today would be a several billion dollar project.
For example, the Leeville bridge has been constructed using a top down method where it is built from the bridge to minimize impact to coastal marshes while the Causeway was built using a barge in open water and channels were dredged to aid in access for the barge. Also the Causeway deck sections were built off site and floated in place using a barge in the same yard that built the concrete columns. The Leeville bridge’s columns are formed off site and trucked in. The rest of the Leeville bridge is built on site so you have a constant stream of cement arriving on site.

Because it includes 7.4 miles of 6 lane interstate across Mobile Bay, at the new height elevation (8 feet higher). It’s similar to the new bridge between New Orleans east and Slidell.

Said it in another thread. Road projects have got to be money laundering schemes.

Yep! The government takes its cut. The construction companies work at a snail's pace to make the job last as long as possible. Then, environmental BS takes place in the middle of all of that. Combine all of that on top of whatever else gets skimmed out of it, and you have an amazing turd sandwich that takes the giant douches many years to complete. I had to throw in a South Park reference.

The bridge will look great in downtown Mobile, though. Hope it happens soon.
