Jumped down that rabbit hole last night and watched the 5 part doc "A Body In The Snow" on YouTube. Well that doc only went through the first trial, which was a hung jury. They did the whole circus all over again this year and she was found not guilty of Second Degree Murder only guilty of basically a DUI.

So I Googled how much she spent on these high dollar lawyers, and was blown away. Her legal fees for the two trials and her bond, were over 5 million dollars. She had to sale her home and use all of her life's savings.

My question is this, if you're found not guilty, should the state be forced to reimburse your legal fees??
I say yes.

Not automatically but the defendant can sue if they think there were issues with prosecution or investigation.

On the second part in the Karen Read case you may not have to wait much longer to see what the Read team is going to do.

Would Karen have qualified for a public defender?

A court appointed lawyer?? Are you serious?? First, it's only free if you can't afford an attorney. She obviously could. The state has unlimited resources to hire experts and such. It's not a fair playing field.

In theory, yes, but we’ve created this police and bureaucratic state that are you willing to bet your life on a public defender? The whole system is bullshite tbh

Did I quick search:

No, not everyone qualifies for a public defender; you must demonstrate that you cannot afford to hire a private attorney. Eligibility is typically based on your income, family size, and any debts you may have.

Thinking about it the Miranda rights stat, “if you cannot afford an attorney one will be provided”.
