I have not. But for crowds this coming season, mardi gras is the day after president's day. That's usually a very crowded long weekend.

If we go, we will leave on Monday and stay through saturday. Not sure which mountain we will try.

Crested Butte doesn't get near the crowds that the I-70 resorts in Colorado get because it is hard to get to from Denver. We loved skiiing in CB during Mardi Gras. Great mountain for beginners (our kids started skiing there at 4 years old and they are now over 31 years of age) and great for extreme skiing (it was invented in CB). Great town and the lift lines are not crowded. You will have a blast. The town of CB also has great restaurants.

Duh, lol, it was, in the mid-1980's. See Rich History of Extreme Skiing

Also, the first U.S. Extreme Skiing Championship was held on The North Face at CB in 1992.

Sorry, that might be hard for an Aggie to understand.

LOL, bless your heart. The 1980s in America? Ski mountaineering as an recreational adventure sport has been around way longer than 1980, in Europe, especially the Alps where it began to manifest into what it is today.

If you want to focus on America, at least look back to when Bill Briggs first descent of Grand Teton in 1971.

I invite you to look up guys like Sylvain Saudan, Heini Holzer, Anselme Baud, Patrick Vallencant, and Stefano De Benedetti.

You tell me if they were doing all that they did at a protected in-bounds resort with lifts in central Colorado or not.

Not to hijack your thread, just wanted to squash some misinformation.

Crested Butte is an awesome town and great mountain for the whole family across all abilities. Way less crowded than the I-70 mountains, usually no lines outside of peak tourist travel times like Christmas/NYE, Spring Break, MLK, etc.

It's a laid back town, a lot sleepier than Summit County or Eagle County towns.

You'll just want to keep an eye on the weather. If your trip there or back requires going over Monarch Pass, they do close it a lot during winter storms.

Crested Butte is a great choice though. Gunnison is down the road and has some dining options as well.

We did CB Mardi Gras 2020. First time skiing for the whole family. Good mountain, not crowded at all when we went. Laid back atmosphere, but we rented a big house on the shuttle line right outside the resort. Went to dinner one night in CB, but rest of the time we just hung at the house.

We did Crested Butte Mardi Gras 2024. We drove from Baton Rouge. Left after school on Friday 5:00ish. Drove straight through, picked up groceries in Gunnison and rental equipment in CB, checked in and hit the ground running the next morning. Never waited more than 2 or 3 minutes to get on a lift, perfect weather and crowd size was just right for the resort. The town of CB is also great, still a small ski town, no big chains at all. Was by far our family’s favorite ski trip.

You’re right about needing to watch the weather but you can also cut through San Juan valley and take a much easier and lower pass. I’ve done it the last two years to avoid weather on monarch pass.

Did y'all stay in Mt. Crested Butte? Where is the best place to rent ski equipment? How is the weather up there in February?

Thanks
