U.S. warships are approaching Venezuelan waters on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, as part of President Donald Trump’s intensified campaign against drug cartels, with a guided missile cruiser and a nuclear-powered attack submarine en route to join an amphibious squadron already deploying to the southern Caribbean.
Venezuela has responded by sending 15,000 troops to its border with Colombia and mobilizing what President Nicolás Maduro claims is a 4.5 million-member civilian militia in anticipation of potential U.S. military action.

The Trump administration has accused Maduro of leading the “Cartel de los Soles” and collaborating with other designated “narco-terrorist” organizations like Tren de Aragua and the Sinaloa Cartel, doubling the reward for his capture to $50 million on August 7, 2025.
quote:

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President Trump is prepared to use “every element of American power” to stop drug trafficking and bring those responsible to justice, reiterating that the U.S. does not recognize Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate leader.

The Trump administration has accused Venezuela’s left-wing President Nicolas Maduro of being involved in cocaine trafficking and working with drug cartels.
quote:

Reporters asked White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt about the possibility of US boots on the ground in Venezuela on August 19.
In response, she said, “President [Donald] Trump has been very clear and consistent. He’s prepared to use every element of American power to stop drugs from flooding into our country and to bring those responsible to justice.”

How do you have a 4.5 million civilian militia if you don't allow civilians to own firearms?

They handing machetes to every male or something?

I don't like American interventionism abroad. This is a bad decision.

With that said, I hate it a lot less than interventionism in the Middle East, Africa, or Southeast Asia for a few reasons:
Venezuela's government is awful and the Western Hemisphere is our sphere of influence per the Monroe doctrine.

I would rather us not be intervening in other countries' affairs at all, but if we're going to do that anyways, Venezuela is a good place to start.

Independent estimates suggest the actual size of Venezuela’s militia may be significantly smaller than the 4.5 million claimed by Maduro, with the most recent independent count from 2020 placing it at around 343,000 members.

Agreed. South America hasn’t seen a major war between South American nations in nearly 100 years.

Perfect time for American nation building to stabilize the continent. First step is to create a vacuum.

I guess it has been almost a century since the Chaco War.

I think it’s fascinating how South America is almost the polar opposite of the Middle East in many ways: wet climates, Christian, borders make complete sense, relatively few ethno/religious conflicts, nearly everyone speaks the same one or two extremely similar languages, yet is still a political and economic clown show.

Actually, it’s super easy, barely an inconvenience! I realize I have no money and just don’t go anywhere!

But in all seriousness, I have a few different numbered lists in my phone of my favorite places based on price point and weather, and I roll dice. I do this a lot for date nights so I don’t overthink things.

It’s just, do I want to sit outdoors or indoors; and do I want a place that’s cheap, modest but a little nicer, or am I willing to go somewhere a little more expensive? I know all the restaurants taste great, so I’m going to enjoy it regardless.

Yea, that's all I expect.

Maybe a quick mission to nab Maduro.

Many of them have a history of throwing off European control to only have a dictator running the country after their "Revolution". We are extremely fortunate(blessed by God) to have had George Washington. If he wanted to be a dictator he could have easily. The vast majority of the continental army would have done whatever he wanted after the Revolution.

I don't think we're ever stemming the flow of drugs into the country to the degree of Singapore but nobody really wants to fight us if we take the gloves off. Trump isn't Obama. They'll fold quickly if Trump makes a move like we're capable of.

Interesting. If Maduro is gone and an actual government develops, this could be great for upstream oil and gas. I’d consider getting back in the industry if Venezuela doesn’t end up in anarchy for the next decade.

It really does kind of defy the human experience. With some minor exceptions, the borders of South America have been stable for nearly 100 years with almost no inter nation feuds.

Like how have they avoided some Brazilian crank stirring up some Manifesto Destino and taking a bite out of a smaller country.

It’s not like the countries maintain capable defense forces.

All their disputes appear to be internal but it doesn’t spill over to destabilize the region.

I really do credit Brazil. They are the logical bully on the block and have never flexed.
