Upgrading the ole rig after 5 years.

I have an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D & a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti I just purchased.

Any suggestions on the motherboard?

PC will be used mainly for gaming.

Doesn't need to be budget pricing, just something that will work well with my components above and that I won't have to replace for a while.

I haven't done a new build in coming up on half a decade now, so I'm out of the loop on the "best". With that said, unless you have some exotic needs, I would say just any decently reviewed b850 would be fine. Just pick one you like the look of, has decent reviews, and doesn't cost too much:

B850 Vs X870

quote:

The main differences between X870 and B850 motherboards lie in their features and target audience: X870 is positioned as a premium option with mandatory high-end features like WiFi 7, USB4, and PCIe 5.0 for both GPU and NVMe, while B850 offers a more budget-friendly approach with optional PCIe 5.0 for GPU and optional WiFi 7/USB4. Both support PCIe 5.0 for at least one NVMe slot, but X870 provides more bandwidth and connectivity options.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:

X870:
Mandatory PCIe 5.0:
Requires the primary PCIe x16 slot to support PCIe 5.0 for graphics cards, ensuring top-tier performance for high-end GPUs.
Mandatory WiFi 7 and USB4:
Includes the latest WiFi 7 standard and USB4 for faster wireless speeds and high-speed data transfer via USB.
Premium Features:
Generally offers more robust VRMs, better cooling solutions, and a wider array of connectivity options (e.g., more USB ports, faster Ethernet).
Target Audience:
Geared towards enthusiasts, overclockers, and users who demand the highest performance and cutting-edge features.

B850:
Optional PCIe 5.0:.
PCIe 5.0 for the primary GPU slot is optional. It may support it, but it's not a requirement.
Optional WiFi 7 and USB4:
.WiFi 7 and USB4 are not mandatory, but some high-end B850 boards may include them.
Price-to-Performance:.
Focuses on providing good value for the price, offering a balance of performance and features without the premium cost of X870.
Target Audience:.
Suitable for mainstream users, gamers, and those who want to experience the latest technologies without breaking the bank.

In essence, the X870 is the high-end choice with all the latest features, while the B850 offers a more affordable alternative with a focus on good value and optional access to cutting-edge technologies.

That what I was thinking, but since I'm going high end on the GPU and CPU, I figured I'd ask for some guidance.

I've seen a bunch that offer some sort of WiFi capabilities. As a gamer, I'll always be hardwired, so this does nothing for me. Unless it means something different that I don't know about?

The x3D line, while amazing gaming chips, actually aren’t particularly taxing on your motherboard. They are extremely heat sensitive and don’t take well to overclocking, at all. Early versions of the chips didn’t even allow it. Any board will give it as much power as it could ever need. Further, increased vcache reduces reliance on RAM, so there’s no need to worry about eeking out an extra half a frame by running a volt and a half through your DIMMs.

As for WiFi, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Most people are going to hardwire their desktops. If you aren’t, definitely get WiFi. Even if you aren’t, there are still other considerations. As an example, my rig is hard wired, but I got a wifi enabled board because I wanted Bluetooth capabilities. Just depends on what you need. Ultimately, wifi is usually about $10, all else equal.
