Hiker dies after being bitten by venomous snake in Tennessee state park

quote:

A hiker died in Tennessee's Savage Gulf State Park after being bitten by a venomous snake, officials said Thursday.

Grundy County Emergency Management Agency personnel were dispatched to a trailhead in the park around 12:30 p.m. local time on August 8, agency director Matthew Griffith told CBS News in a statement. The unidentified hiker was about half a mile down the trail when first responders, including fire and rescue workers, EMS members and park rangers, arrived.

Griffith said a witness reported the man had picked up a snake, and the reptile then bit him on the hand. The snake is believed to be a timber rattlesnake, Griffith said.

The hiker was transported to an area hospital, Griffith said, and died from his injuries there.

Griffith said the hiker appeared to have died from an allergic reaction, but said the hiker's full cause of death has yet to be released.

timber rattlesnake

Came across one on the AT when I heard it start rattling right next to my foot. I cut its head off with a knife, took the rattle, and left his carcass on a rock as a warning to other snakes.

ETA - definitely did not attempt picking it up... thats just dumb

When someone dies quickly from a timber rattlesnake bite, its very likely that they just happened to be allergic to the venom. Without being allergic, an untreated bite would typically take many many hours if not days to be fatal from this species of snake.

That's the main thing that scares me about venomous snakes. Getting popped by complete happenstance and being allergic without even knowing, causing rapid death, would suck. I don't plan on messing with snakes, but you never know what one step would get you.

ETA: It is also an allergy that you can just develop over time. So, you could think you're fine in that regard, get bit, and you're done.

Totally possible to be allergic to the venom. Rattlesnake bites are rarely fatal. Cottonmouth and copperhead bites, too.

I’m going to guess that it had everything to do with the SNAKE BITE.
