For those that hunt river bottomland hardwood woods (cat island, Yancey, Dewey, bayou macon) or similar terrain, do you normally wear hip boots out there?
I know it is different terrain from Joyce or Maurepas where that is a true swamp.
I hunted private next to cat island before and i was fine with knee boots but then again i was not in the actual NWR itself.
Thanks OB

I squirrel hunt at cat island a lot. I wear knee boots but there have been a few times where I wish I had hip boots. For the most part I can get to where I want.

Good to hear.
I definitely don’t want to take a step and sink in soft mud in 30 degree weather in knee boots

Yes, I use them in the Pearl River WMA. Just depends on how much water I am expecting. Bean boots for occasional puddles, knee boots for certain ankle deep water, and hip boots for anything approaching knee-height water.

I hunted Cat Island for years on a property that was on the river, well across the road from the river. Normally we needed hip boots beginning in Mid December.

Yes I wear hip boots, uninsulated lacrosse. The insulated are too stiff to walk a lot.

Bought a pair of Dan’s hip boots 4 years and they’re still going strong. Got tired of lacrosse not holding up after a couple seasons and my feet freezing in cold weather. Roomier boot and the cordura has held up well through briars

Good to know. I have not scouted it much but cat island looks like a place where it would be useful. Any where in LA really

Personally, I haven’t purchased hip boots since I’ve discovered waist waders. I like the idea that I’ll always have something “dry” to sit on when the time comes…
