Visualization of dollar devaluation. Is a devalued dollar good, or bad?

Whether or not the dollar is tanking is not up for debate. The debate surrounds the ramifications.

Trumps goal is to devalue the dollar. It’s the one thing he’s been very consistent on since pre-term 1. He wants this to help with manufacturing. He believes China “cheats” by constantly devaluing their own currency so other countries can buy cheap shite.

So, is this a good thing or a bad thing? When you see how much value the dollar has lost just since January, you can see why there is some pause with lowering interest rates.

But why? Are we better off with a devalued dollar?

I am no where near informed enough to inject my own opinion here one way or the other. What are some negative effects?

It definitely helps make all exports more competitive and importing look less appetizing than buying local. There’s plenty of precedent. Reagan and the Plaza Accords in the ‘80’s are the direct parallel. I suspect he’s driving towards something similar.

Appreciate a comparator.

So, this isn’t the first time we’ve tried this?

Not at all. It’s a bit more involved for us to do it since we’re the world’s reserve currency, but this is the most likely path. It also helps with paying off national debt since that debt is denominated in our dollars. Not necessarily the most……popular move on the world stage, but everyone’s out for themselves so we might as well be, too.

A devalued currency is good for asset holders, but bad for those without assets.

Widening the gap between the haves and have-nots. Sharpen those guillotines.

It’s good if you make money exporting goods to other countries. It’s bad if you buy imported goods or travel internationally.

So definitely sucks for me.

This was my initial instinct.

I’m glad I took my extended trip to Europe this past winter

It's certainly not going to change any of my plans, and current valuation ain't got shite on the $1.69/EUR I paid in France back in the day, but yeah, no fun

The president said it was bad until it happened and now it's good.

So we have that going for us.
