A few friends from Tennessee and I are staying at the Islander Lodge Labor Day weekend. A couple of the guys have never been saltwater fishing and are looking for recommendations on gear and lures to get. We plan on mostly wade fishing the islands as we will just have the rented skiffs to get around in.

Texas customs screw lock jig heads and Mirrolure Lil John’s have caught a lot of fish for me out there. Bring a spook jr and One Knocker for morning/evening and if it’s overcast. 17mr’s and soft dines can work as well but you will have to work around the grass. Weedless swim baits will help with that.

Same idea as Hall59 but use some different lures.

1/8oz jig head (shad head) and a Down South Lures tail usually bone and silver flake or purple w/ silver belly and chartreuse tail.

Suspending bait - really like a soft dine out there. Also will use a Yo Zuri twitch bait.

Topwater - Rapala Skitterwalk or Mirrolure She Pup. Heddon Spooks will work out there if the freshwater guys want to bring what they have from home.

Bring some gold and silver spoons and tie on if the trout bite is dead. You will get some tugs in from a variety of fish (many with teeth). Size up to a 40lb leader if doing this.

Variety of jig head sizes, adjusting for current. Whatever soft plastics you prefer. Expect plenty of sharks.

We were just out there on the Pelican.
Marker 54 shrimp under popping cork was our best combo.
Topwater was also doing well.
Matrix shad magneto or light colors under a cork were also doing well.
