Houston Country Clubs - Junior Membership

If you were going to join a country club in Houston, which one would you choose?
I live in the Oak Forest area and am considering joining a club so I can play more golf and avoid the hassle of fighting for good tee times without a long commute. So far, I’ve spoken with a friend who is a member at Champions and another at Braeburn, and I’ve also talked with the membership director at the Golf Club of Houston.

Do you have a budget in mind? Northgate is great and significantly cheaper than everything that you listed, but would be a 30 minute drive from OF.
Braeburn has a year waitlist last I heard. Champions is outstanding, but don't know anything about membership. GCOH has a great deal that includes their member course, tournament course, Black Hawk, and both Black Horses (BHorse doesn't bring much value, but its super close).
My buddy enjoys Pine Forest, but I haven't been myself. Think they are on the 2nd of 3 9-hole renovations, so I'd ask about improvement schedule.
Love Royal Oaks, but they will be closing down to replace the greens at the end of the year.

Really need to know what you want out of it. Do you want the country club atmosphere or just great golf. If you’re serious about golf, Champions is the only answer in Houston itself. If you’re open to drive a little farther, Carlton Woods is the best of both worlds with great players and atmosphere, but it’s a bit more pricey than the others.

Houston CC would be my choice

Member of Black Hawk locally.
Good value like poster above with 5 courses to play. The drive is equal distance to all of the courses for you. I’m a member because of the family vibe but play the most of golf at GCOH with a big group of guys.
GCOH - replacing greens next year.
Braeburn- nice club with a 75k initiation for my age, don’t know what it is for juniors. I like the course but would get old playing it all the time. Can introduce you to a few guys at Braeburn.
Carlton Woods- excellent choice but the drive is not conducive to using for practicing. Know a couple of members here to get you introduced here as well.
Champions- traditional course with IMO the best golfers in the city. If your goal is to play against great competition this is the choice. I know members who would sponsor you if you need help.
Also a member of Squire in Louisiana, Champions Retreat in Georgia and about to be Prairie Dunes. If you want to play golf here locally I can bring you to meet the guys at GCOH or Black Hawk.

If you’re well below 35 and a good player, Champions has the best junior program in the city as a portion of your dues will go to your conversion to full member

They still have reciprocal with Walden on Lake Conroe?

I’m 31 and currently focused on golf, so I’m looking for a club where I can join a regular group for weekly play. I’m also working on improving my game, so strong practice facilities are a big plus.
I don’t have kids yet, but it would be nice to eventually have a place where I can bring the family, enjoy the pool, and take part in social events and activities.
I played Royal Oaks on Saturday with a friend and enjoyed the course. I kow its about to be renovated as said before. The property looks great, and while I only visited the locker room, the overall experience was solid though the price feels a bit high for me at the moment.
Not sure if I am a good enough player (12 Handicap) to join Champions, but it seems like that one is the most golf-focused and has a large group of young guys.
I will give GCOH serious consideration, especially since it offers access to several reciprocal courses. I need to check out Blackhawk and Blackhorse, as well as all others listed.

GCOH is a golf club, not a country club. No pool or tennis courts etc. They have a gym and I think it's included in the golf membership. There is a good group of about 70 guys on distribution list here that are fun to play with. Handicaps ranges from +2 to 13. I never have to worry about getting a time here to play because it is done for me by the group leader.
I joined Black Hawk because it is a true country club, my wife and daughter come out and swim, there is pickleball and tennis courts and a good group of guys to play with. Good practice facility but not as good as GCOH. Probably about 4 or 5 LSU guys. I would join here if wife is involved, she will feel more at home.
Let me know what price the membership directors are quoting you, possibly could make a call on your behalf, they play games with the initiation fees.

Yeah, that’s why I’m at Black Hawk now as well. Looked at Pine Forest, but Clay Road at 5pm on a weekday was not something I was interested in.

I joined out at Blackhawk as well a little over a year ago. Solid course and good practices facilities. I liked it more than Falcon or Willowfork when I was comparing Katy area options after playing at Cinco as the primary course. Seemed to be a nicer course not surrounded by housing, has a grass range, year round pool, etc.
If there was one knock, I'd say the social scene could improve. Since many of the members live 10-30 minutes away, it doesn't have the same hang out vibe as Sugar Creek, for example.
