Incumbent Sheriff Hutson struggling to match challengers’ campaign war chests(just $715)

Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson’s campaign coffers have dwindled precipitously compared to those of some challengers, according to finance reports filed last month.

Hutson, who is seeking a second term, had just $715 cash on hand at the close of the mid-July filing period, according to reports posted to the campaign finance portal of the Louisiana Ethics Administration Program.

she was in charge during May 16 jailbreak of 10 inmates from the Orleans Justice Center jail that Hutson supervises, but not the mistaken release of violent offender Khalil Bryan on July 25. The two incidents have led to calls for Hutson to resign from office or to seek outside help to properly run the jail, suggestions she has rejected.

Nine of the jail escapees have been recaptured, but four-time convicted killer Derrick Groves remains at large. Bryan also has not returned to custody, and on Saturday was officially declared a fugitive by the US Marshals Service.
