I recently purchased a piece of property with a small pond (app 3/4 acre) in MS. I have a grass problem around the pond and was told about purchasing 1-2 grass carp fish to help with the grass.

I have no experience with grass carp. I know I have to abide by the MS rules regarding Fish and Wildlife issues. Any feedback from H & G board will be helpful.

thank you in advance, Chili Mac

If you put grass carp to help take care of a grass problem, you will turn your grass problem into a carp problem.

I know in Louisiana you have to follow certain WLF rules and get the sterile carp, but I’m pretty sure if you have a MS address you are free to buy the sterile or non sterile fish. Where’s the property?

here in TN you can contact the TN Wildlife agency and they will recommend the correct number and type for your pond.

i found out we have a dozen or so sterile egyptian carp in our 3.5 acre pond that were essentially 'signed off on' by TN wildlife by the former homeowner 10 years ago.

those things are FAT AF now and in the mornings you can so those damn dolphins cruising around the shore.

eta thanks to this board after my original post earlier this year; i never followed up after mentioning i had these in the pond. i called TN wildlife and they still had records from when they came out and assessed it. i was worried they were going to eat my shore away.

Managing Mississippi Ponds & Small Lakes: A Landowners Guide

Pages 21-23. Info on biological control of aquatic weeds using grass carp (sterile-triploid). They are extremely effective in controlling many submerged succulent aquatic weeds but not all aquatic weeds. You’ll need to know what type of aquatic weeds you are dealing with. Personally, I’m an advocate of using grass carp for managing-controlling aquatic weeds in recreational fish ponds.

Contact the Miss State University county extension agent in whatever county the property is located and they’ll assist with information or steer you in the right direction as to who speak with in MS - either a MS State U or state of MS fisheries biologist. LINK

I have a bud in MS that got a couple of grass carp for a pond about that size and it worked wonderfully. They have lived for over 15 years now and still eating!

The lake at my place is right at 10 acres. It's very deep for a lake/pond, approximately 30ft at the deepest point and the banks are for most of it very steep.

Last year there was a lot of grass in the lake in the more shallow areas, that don't drop off. I bought I think it was about 40 of them and put them in the lake last fall.

The guy was saying that I needed more based on the size but with the banks so steep, I didn't think I did and if it turns out that I do, I can always add more. I think he was saying that there should be somewhere around 12-15 per acre but I don't remember for sure.

Anyway, the grass is so much better this summer. I may still add some more but not this year.
