Hodges Gardens on Hwy 171

I remember seeing the entrance to this place as a kid when we drove up highway 171 towards Many. Hadn’t thought about it in a long time but just looked it up and see it’s been closed since 2018. Is this place now completely closed off to the public or can you still access the lake and grounds?

Pretty sure it’s closed to public still.

You can still see all the structures on Google Earth. It’s a shame they don’t do something with the place.

We rented the cabins and the lodge for a family reunion over thanksgiving back in 2010 and the place was first class for a state park. We had a fantastic weekend exploring the grounds and just chilling. That was the last time I had been there.

Make ‘em an offer they can’t refuse and go into the ‘gardens’ business

Went to check out the Christmas lights there when my daughter was an infant (about 9mon) Very "Christmasy". Not nearly over-crowded. Excellent atmosphere. Still the best Christmas light celebration I've been to.
Was waiting in line to buy some hot chocolate, and the wife holding our daughter, our daughter decides to grab an electric cord. She pulled and unplugged a huge line of lights. lol

Don't you know there's some ole State Park employee still hammering bass and bow smoking some deer at this place.

We went about 6 months before I closed for good.
Neat place. We went twice.
We really liked it. Spent all day picnicking.

It was donated to the state but they didn’t give any money to keep it up so the state gave it back to the Hodges Foundation
They use it mostly for seminars trainings now There is a guy in charge of the place and the management of the forest that lives there. Wouldn’t be a bad gig to have all that too yourself

Did an Easter Egg hunt for my kids there back in 1991 when I was stationed at Fort Polk.

Went swimming in the pools at the Lodge across the Highway as a kid in the 80s. Grandparents lived in Hornbeck. Seems to be in ruin now.

There was a thread a few years ago and Hodges Gardens came up LINK

Hell yea I do. It was just plain Hodges Gardens at first with the Motel across the street. It was just one wing, two story motel with a pool. The check in was next to the coffee shop and a buffet area with a bar in the back. Used to have a private club in the bar area because Sabine parish was dry. My father was good friends with Mr. Hodges. Used to let my brother and his friends fish the lake in the gardens before they started renting boats. Then they built another two story wing with another pool. And along in the late 60's built the first 9 holes, and later on the second. The motel and golf course was bought out by a local Dr. here and shortly after the check in and food area burnt to the ground. It went into bankruptcy shortly after that and whoever held the note (bank) let another motel/hotel property owner run it until it was bought out by a local car dealerships owner. He held on to it for several years and sold it to some Chinese interests and they were gonna send Chinese kids over here to go to school and play golf. When the recession hit in the late 2000's, it was closed forever. When you drive by it now, its hard to tell the fairways from the rough. It was a wonderful place. The state came in and turned it into a state park (the gardens)and ran it into the ground.
