Tamarcus Cooley thrives in the box mostly started at Nickel during his first 2 seasons.

AJ Haulcy is an aggressive big hitter with great instincts and had 5 INTs
Defensive Grade (PFF): 80.5
Coverage Grade (PFF): 85.5
—> He is a projected strong safety and spent most of his time as strong.

Delane
Has spent time everywhere including. Both safety positions (although most admit he is likely our best corner option)

Gilbert
Played free safety at both LSU and Texas AM. For whatever reason I felt like he was down in the box a lot for LSU ( Furthur, he had a the shoulder)

Spears
Is a name that is the up and comer; the guy that might surprise but he is more of a star (S 6-3 208) big strong safety? Free?

Maybe, I just don’t want it to be Gilbert? Just hoping his play was the injury and not purely ability…

If it’s not Gilbert; who could be the 2025 LSU Free safety?

Don’t overthink it.

FS: Cooley
SS: Haulcy
DB: Delane
DB: Stamps
NB: Pickett

ETA: depending on the matchup, you can switch Pickett and stamps if there is a mismatch in the slot

Spears at FS, Haulcy at SS, Cooley at Nickel

If I see Jardin Gilbert run on to the field with the 1st team vs Clemson, I’m turning off the TV.

Definite possibility at corner… if DJ is NOT ready week 1 and stamps or woodland don’t take a big step.

Jackson would be CB2

If Gilbert starts at FS we are in trouble.

I don’t know a ton about Haulcy but his stats are pretty eye opening. Try him out in fall camp as FS if he has the speed. Give Spears an opportunity at SS. Should Haulcy or Spears struggle move Haulcy back to SS and bench Spears. Not ideal situation in the DB room, this defense will struggle this year. Big first test @ Clemson. The back 7 better have improved tackling, going to be a physical game.

Spears is the most physically gifted safety in the room. Has elite size at 6’3 208 and rangy as hell wirh great long speed. He has the tools to be an elite centerfielder FS. If Spears is truly ready to seize the FS spot it’ll allow AJ to play SS and Cooley to play the nickel. Excited to see what that kid does in fall camp

Gilbert / Spears = FS
Cooley = Sage Ryan snaps
Haulcy = Major Burns snaps

5th S - Toviano / Jackson

I really like how this defense has several guys who can play multiple positions with a lot of range. Haulcy, Cooley, Delane, Gilbert, Perkins, Spears, Toviano, Pickett. Having 8 guys that can move around in the secondary is quite a luxury.

I don't see Pickett opening the year at Nickel.
