ATT wants $25 a month ($300 year) for a wifi-7 router. You can buy and own your own and put the gateway in IP Passthrough.

Nah buy you're own router, install openWRT, get cool grafana dashboards.

It is free with 2Gbps or faster plans but it has not been getting rave reviews.

So we have 1G ATT fiber, I can just get my own router and plug it in? I don't have to use theirs?

You still have to use it, but you can put it in passthrough mode so it doesn't really do anything, your router will get your public IP.
