Will open for the 28/29 season.

OKC’s new arena will be more intimate, OKC Mayor David Holt said. Capacity will likely be in the 17,000s, down from 18,203 at Paycom Center.

The actual arena will be much larger by square footage. By 200,000ish square feet.

Nothing and everything. It was built as a hockey arena to entice NHL at the time but also was made to allow basketball (but that was not expected at the time). It was part of our first MAPS projects to transform the city. 1 penny tax and the hockey arena was last thing built.

But when it cane time to build the winning bidder realized they made a huge miscalculation in cost, by millions. They bid $89m. In order to protect the citizens and preserve votes for future projects the local builder said they would voluntarily eat the extra cost. It started in 99 and was opened in 2002. Its very small for suites and concourses and amenities.

The new one will cost $1b and was approved by MAPS 4, our 4th major projects vote. Each MAPS doesn’t start until prior one ends. Everything is 100% paid for up front, one thing I like about our local city government. The owners pitched in $50m and citizens the rest, with guarantees team can’t be moved thru 2055 or later.

Trust me I know. Just winning the title increased their value by 9 figures alone. But thats all the city squeezed out of them and I let them know about it. My rep voted against it (to be on ballot) but it was put to a citywide vote and passed with like 67%. Nothing more can be done, its getting built on a penny tax. Once they collect the costs the tax goes away (but then there will be MAPS 5 most likely).

OKC gets two new arenas before Seattle gets another team.

Nah. Current one opened in 2002 and we got them in 2008. But we have built 2 arenas in the same time they built 0. That was the issue to begin with in Seattle, not building a new one or massively upgrading current one.

Teams have figured out that they don't really make much money from the last few thousand nose bleed seats, in any sport. They make more money on devoting more space to more of the expensive seats and by reducing total capacity creating scarcity. Make the overall experience better and more expensive on average and overall to a reduced number of in house customers. Let the nose bleeds watch on TV.

New NFL stadiums are smaller, college too. Northwestern University is building a new smaller stadium and during construction they have a temp stadium of just 20k on the site of the school's lacrosse field set right on the river. During construction they have been selling out the new little stadium with the better setting and actually making more money with their temp stadium than they were with their half full 50k+ seat stadium they tore down.

Kansas is opening the first phase of a new, smaller upscale football stadium next month, when it is fully completed the new stadium will only seat around 45,000, down from 50,000. KU for basketball last year even removed seats from Allen Field House in order to increase the number of premium seats. And did this not due to lack of demand. KU has sold out every single game in Allen going back many decades in a row in basketball.

Smaller, but better is the trend.
