Took the kid to see Elio this weekend

The original cut of Elio was supposed to be about Elio finding his identity before Pixar higher-ups cut those parts out. Some of the people working on the movie said after they did that it became "a movie about nothing"
The people at Pixar who tried to make this movie about some leftist "queer coded" bullcrap should never work in media again.
The bones of a great movie are there. Elio has just lost his parents when he stumbles on to an exhibit about NASA's Voyager and its search for alien life. The narrator mentions how "Voyager will never return to earth and see its creators again" and Elio obviously draws a parallel with his personal experience of loneliness after his parents' death, and that sparks his obsession with aliens.
Great setup for a move right there. Execution was mixed, but it certainly wasn't "a movie about nothing" and overall pretty decent. Loss and loneliness are about as human as emotions can get.

They could've made it a much better movie, but instead of being professionals and pivoting into plan B, they spray shot the issues all over the place; losing his parents, relationship with aunt, having no friends, etc. Instead of leaning heavily into one of those, they dipped their toe into each, and the result was an extremely shallow, forgettable movie.

Bad riff on Lilo and Stitch is still bad. A mediocre (at best) movie about nothing is better than what they originally intended, IMHO.

Pixar has lost the public trust. It's their own faults.

I think those all stemmed from how he chose to deal with the loss of his parents though. Issues like that aren't just isolated to being sad about your parents, they bleed over into a lot of different things. Now granted, I don't think they expanded on that nearly as well as they could and should have. But I do think all of those things being issues go back to one of the core points of the movie, dealing with loneliness.

Those are fair points, and I think you actually summed up my feelings when you mentioned their failure on expanding it. I think it was all rushed:
1. He never really has a good relationship with his aunt, and they didn't show any glimmer of something he is holding onto. When they tell him he can stay on the ship, it was the happiest he could have been in the movie. They didn't really give us a legitimate reason for him to stay with his aunt.
2. They really rushed his friendship with Glordon. They basically had a quick montage of fun, then they were friends for life. I know these are kids, and that kind of stuff can and does happen, but it still felt rushed.
The one thing that I think they did do well was the father's love for his son (Glordon and Grigon). They dropped little hints of the dad being disappointed in his son but still knowing exactly who his son is. So, the ending really paid off in that part of the story.

This is a true statement.
The last ones we saw in Theaters was Cars 3 and Coco.
The last one we watched on streaming excitedly when it came out was Onward.
We just haven’t cared. Even though my kids are older they will go see Shrek or How to train your dragon, etc. given the opportunity. They loved Wild Robot as 17 and 15 year olds.
