The New Orleans City Council on Thursday approved an agreement with the Orleans Parish School Board to split the revenue generated from school zone camera tickets, formalizing a 60-40 divide the city and school district decided on earlier this year. Under the split, the school board will take 40% of net revenue generated from camera tickets and divide it among the public schools overseen by the Orleans Parish School Board.

The agreement comes a year after a state law required local municipalities to sign revenue-sharing agreements with school authorities before collecting camera-induced speeding fines. Under the law, net revenue from fines generated from the cameras in school zones must be split between the local municipality and the governing authority of the school where the citation was issued.

Sally Davis, a spokesperson for the state Department of Education, said that agency — which oversees a handful of type 2 charter schools in New Orleans — has not been asked to participate in discussions with the city. Sarah McDonald, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of New Orleans, did not immediately respond to an inquiry about whether the Archdiocese was in discussions with the city about camera revenue from school zones in front of parochial schools

Nola has illegally been collecting school zone tickets over the past year in violation of state law because the required cooperative endeavor agreements weren’t in place.

Recently, during a contested ticket, the city attorney responded that he didn’t know what a cooperative endeavor agreement was. Yet, they were still trying to collect on the ticket.

As I read this article, the city signed an agreement with OPSB just before school starts in a couple of weeks. I was under the impression that OPSB oversees 1 school since all other public schools are now charter schools.

So will this agreement only be in effect for the area surrounding the Leah Chase school?

Appears the archdiocese, charter, and other private schools don’t have agreements in place.

Seems like teedy rushed to get this done to keep the funds the city collected illegally.

Ah yes, the old "it's okay to do x if the money goes to the schools" routine.

If the public is against something, (i.e. casinos, camera tickets, etc) then give the money to the schools and it will be okay. Nevermind how they cut an equal amount from the existing school budget.

These speeding cameras in school zones are such a frickin scam. They need to be banished across the US. Why don't the states and feds just go ahead and just tax us another 30% and get it over with. All they care about is revenue generation. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln would be rolling over in they graves with all this bullshite.

I agree the camera tickets are bullshite. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Money isn't the problem with schools. Parents not raising kids right is the problem.

We need more traffic cameras in white neighborhoods to pay for programs.

The charter schools in OPSB are "public" charters. They are still publicly funded. OPSB is also trying to transition away from full charter. Makes sense, seeing as the district improved under charter control. Can't have that nonsense.
