They are popping up around the house and my neighbors house. Any worries? Little kids are safe? It looks like they are temporary.

I’ve seen them for years hovering and hunting. I’ve never noticed any being aggressive towards me. They seem to be focused on hunting.

Wife and I just had this same conversation at the lake where we have one. We did a bunch of research. They are scary looking but they are fairly harmless. The females are the only ones with stingers. Only will sting if you provoke them. Sting is very low on the Schmidt sting scale. Lower than a honey bee. They are very territorial against other flying insects. We have watched this one chase off several wasps so we are not killing him. Only bad part is he lives right in a walkway so he scares the hell out of everybody when he pops out.

Relatively harmless but annoying and pretty intimidating. Big bastards and dig some unsightly holes. I soaked one with wasp spray and it just flew off like it was nothing. One got in the house and I nearly destroyed the kitchen trying to kill it.

My old house must have been built on a cicada killer mecca. Certain years there would be well over 20-30 flying at a time. Never had a problem with them. I gave them as much space as possible. But it's scary seeing those huge bastards flying towards you and looking you in the eye.

It's crazy watching them flying in carrying a dead cicada.

I had them for a couple of years around my patio with small kids. I thought they were cool to watch but a dozen swarming wasn’t fun.

They were tunneling under my patio concrete where the ground was low and they were under the concrete. I would fill up the holes with sand and water excessively. They eventually got the idea and left.
