EXCLUSIVE: Here’s a big one just in time for San Diego Comic-Con.

HBO Max is progressing with its Booster Gold TV series and has attached Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins to write the pilot. If taken to series, we understand the plan is for Jenkins to show-run.

Coming off the back of a landmark Emmy nominations day for The Penguin, Booster Gold could therefore become one of Warner Bros. Discovery‘s next big DC Comics TV adaptations.

Created by Dan Jurgens, the protagonist, real name Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, is a member of the Justice League born in Gotham City who attends university on a football scholarship. He is expelled for gambling and becomes a superhero, although continues to irritate others with his obsession for fame and wealth. His nickname came via Ronald Reagan after he saved the former POTUS.

Although Warner Bros. has sequel options on Corenswet and Brosnahan, a sequel announcement does not appear to be imminent. Instead, sources say the studio is fast-tracking a “Wonder Woman” movie. And the studio is thrilled with Matt Reeves’ just-submitted screenplay draft for the sequel to “The Batman.”

ETA: new interview with Gunn

quote:

Long established as an allegory for the immigrant experience, especially when viewed through the personal histories of Superman‘s comic book co-creators — second-generation Jewish immigrants Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster — DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn said his forthcoming film entry of Kal-El keeps in tune with the original 1938-created vision.

“I mean, Superman is the story of America,” the Superman helmer told The Times U.K. in a new profile. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”

When asked how the blockbuster may be perceived in predominantly red versus blue states, especially amid prevailing anti-immigrant and refugee sentiment, Gunn responded, “Yes, it plays differently, but it’s about human kindness and obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them.”

“Yes, it’s about politics,” Gunn said of his take. “But on another level it’s about morality. Do you never kill no matter what — which is what Superman believes — or do you have some balance, as Lois believes? It’s really about their relationship and the way different opinions on basic moral beliefs can tear two people apart.”

I'm no fan, but it's not just them. John campea and others have mentioned they've heard from some people that it's bad. I've said many times on here that I hope the movie is a huge success, but the footage has me concerned.

I am not really sure how to take that. Not sure I have ever read a Daily Beast review

Hopefully it isn't terrible

Real momentum from what? Nick Schager’s leaked review?

They’ve been screening it very early which shows they have confidence in it

Word is it’s going to be divisive. Screening viewers are saying people are going to either love or hate it.

I can see that being the case. I don’t love some of its tone and I kind of hate his suit, but I think overall it’s the right direction for the universe

As for this reviewer

Funny stuff to you and me, but a lot of critics agree with that. Bad reviews would be a bummer for this film, and could affect it's box office.

So Superman might be the best movie of the year now.

Yeah definitely a bummer—the entire article is on twitter but I’m not reading it in detail

This is just a guess and I’m going see it regardless but I think you’ll have the Gunn fans loving it but I think the true blue Superman fans will hate it and the Snyder fans of course will hate it but not sure that even matters because it’s inevitable.

It’s the culture online today in part. I’m a massive DC Snyder fan, but they went a different direction. I’m not going to not give the new universe a chance just because I’d rather something else that the GA didn’t want.

You think the boy scout Reeves type fans wouldn’t like this one? It seems most inspired by that era to me

If you’re a Snyder fan you know how passionate and unreasonable a lot of that group is. You know a lot of them will hate it automatically especially after Gunn took a shot at yal. There’s even a Snyder fan theory that this is all going to collapse quickly and Snyder will be brought back to save DC. This is not a personal shot at you but you do know the majority of Snyder fans are crazy right?

I mean I saw that there was a Reddit post that was taken down immediately where someone wanted to ruin the new movie and post spoilers online that was picked up by reporters.

I think it’s overblown, but Snyder fans are passionate I’ll give you that, especially the movement that got the Snyder cut greenlit

I love MOS. I liked Justice League and BvS extended cut, but Snyder's films have been getting worse since then. The rebel moon films were just awful. I think he'll be at Netflix for a very long time

And I’m not saying I totally disagree with the Snyder fans. I think WB screwed that whole thing up a lot more than he did. There are a lot of good things in his DC movies. I’m just saying that they do have an axe to grind and they don’t mind doing it.

Outside of discussing his hardcore fans, I don't think Snyder is relevant to the discussion anymore.

I think this movie's issues are going to be disliked by the normies but the hardcore Superman fans will like it. I just am not sure if there are enough of those to make this a huge hit.

I just don't know if audiences are going to be fans of the devolved comic book movie. The camp, colors, and (forces) comedy. I think s major problem with Superman in general is a lack of emotional stakes. He's more of an exhibit of spectacle to me.

I saw the preview for the first time tonight and my one takeaway was that it looks overloaded as frick and way too campy for Superman.

Doesn’t do it for me.
