Looking for a place to bring the kids to do a few out door activities in the mountains. They would like to go some place we have never been, therefore, Gatlinburg, Bryson city, and north Georgia are out of the question as we have been there. Will to drive about 12 hours. Any suggestions of an area that could appease a 15 and 16 year old. Arkansas?

Get on a plane and hit up Utah.
You can fly into Vegas and circle around the Grand Canyon hitting Zion and Bryce Canyon before heading down into AZ for the Grand Canyon.
OR
You can fly into Salt Lake City and head over to Park City and/or drive up into Idaho.

The obsession with driving long distances is for:
a) People with five kids
b) Old people
c) People that bring far too much crap

I second Utah. We stayed in Kanab at basecamp37. Kanab is an old small movie town centrally located between Bryce, Zion, and a lot of the slot canyons (and the wave). We chose to fly into St. George, it was only an hour or so away from Kanab.

Kayaking on the Buffalo River in North Arkansas.
Buffalo Outdoor Center is who we used last year.

I almost have it down to where 90% of the extra shite my wife insists we bring is limited to 1-2 suitcases/boxes that we can set aside and not touch for the entire trip.
Not including the extra clothes we bring, with smaller kids I get that, and it doesn't take that much more room.

Great suggestion but depends on when you're going.
By early July the river is usually very low.

Given your criteria, you've boxed yourself into Arkansas. I hear it's great, but I've personally never been to that part of the state though.
