First boat so take it easy if this is elementary but does anyone know what fitting i should use to go on here which is the connection for the gas intake?

previous owner had the hose slipped on with clamp and it was so tight i had to cut it off. I purchased the same size hose (3/8”) and it’s super loose on there. I don’t get . Is a hose supposed to slip over or should there be a fitting here?

As the others say, get an appropriately sized hose clamp. Also get a small socket or good quality end wrench to fit the clamp so you can really tighten the clamp. It is hard to tighten a clamp enough with a screwdriver which will cause your motor to suck air through the leak.

any idea why the 3/8” hose i took off fits a lot more snug on the fitting than the new 3/8” i purchased?

Don’t think I have ever seen that. Are you sure they are both fuel line? Should say on the line whether it is rated for gasoline.

If one is loose and one is tight they are obviously different sizes, Maybe one shrunk up and got stiff over time. Mercury uses 3/8 and 5/16 depending on the HP, I think. Is it loose at the engine connection, or engine connection fitting too??

These are the two hoses. The older one is in between 1/16 - 1/8” smaller on the ID

Guessing it just shrunk over time

The hose should fit snug before you clamp it. That is the case with any barbed fitting. If it goes on with no resistance it will leak no matter how you clamp it.

Might hit it lightly with the heat gun.
