Any advice tips for booking flights with a 55 lb dog?

Which airline? Some airlines have different costs and rules than others.
Delta recently upped their fee from $95 each way to $150 each way. That was a nice little surprise last time we flew with our dog.

not sure I would put my dog that large in a plane's cargo hold...how long is the flight and is driving the dog not an option?

Definitely not. Never put your dog in a cargo hold. Ours is small enough to come on the plane.

yeah zero chance my dog is going in cargo. Not happening
