How to protect pumpkins while on the plant.

I just planted some pumpkin seeds in my yard. First year doing it by myself. I have a lot of squirrels so I’m worried about if they actually grow. How would I protect them.
Read lots of different stuff online, but what has worked for y’all?

They tear up my watermelons, but seem to leave my pumpkins alone. You might be lucky.
