I’ve never really gotten into crabbing but I want to this weekend with my wife and boy. Is this a good time of year, are they running? Was thinking about going into the shin deep water at the end of lake road in lacombe. Turkey necks good enough? Do the hand lining method?

No need to go in the water, just throw hand line from shore. Tie on turkey necks. Small crabs last time we went to LaComb, but it was still fun for the kids.

Here come they "go to ricks/lip-sticks on bourbon" and "if you 100% want to catch them go to the Mansion* in Amite."

Regarding what youre wanting, summer time can be a good time at Lake Road. Used to hand line for them regularly on the right side of road just before and after the boat launch under the powerlines. The chicken on a string method works best. No need to go out into the lake, although you could do it near where the old camp was at the end of Lake Road.

You have to get there early as shite, but if you don't want to fight the crowd on the road, go to the end take a left and walk and find a decent beach before the mouth of Bayou Lacombe and crab there.

And cast you a line bruh, and catch a hardhead

Do you have a boat? Could just get some drop nets and do that in the lake.

If you swing by Gus' in Slidell, you can get nets and twine. I went on Memorial day right across the twin span near Irish Bayou on the old Hwy 11 bridge. Go early and you 'll get a decent spot. I like to stay on the bridge closest to where I parked due to the current being too swift in the middle. I also used turkey necks and caught about 30 in 2.5 hours. 10 good ones and the rest were barely keepers but they were full.

Or do Lake road like already said. They will be running.

This is the best time of the year for crabs. Never crabbed around there but Ive heard it's a good place. I like to use turkey necks as bait, they hold up well. I add a perch head on my bait hook too.

Turkey necks on a line. Have a dip net. You need to get in calf high water to have a better chance at scooping them up. We went in July last year and caught 60

Crabbing is fun when they are running, but always hot as hell.

What area do you live? I've caught plenty from a kayak before.

Learned alot about crabbing from youtube channels like these. Search their channels, most of the crabbing is done from land or pier. Especially The Old Couple Outdoors. My heros! They catch huge blue crab year round in MS off public piers not too far from where you live. I grew up in Baton Rouge believing you could only catch good size crabs in the hot months of late July through Sept. I know better now.
Also, watch the vids for the new style "Spring Traps". They work well. I own four of them.
Crap..most of the links above died.
Search Youtube for "The Old Couple Outdoors" "Pelican Bone Outdoors"
"Fish Man Mike" & " Dat Louisiana Life"

Crabs were running in Hopedale last weekend. Put 2 traps down Saturday night, had about 2 dozen by 11 am Sunday. Full and good sized.

Used catfish bodies as bait. Made the suckers pay for stealing our expen$I've-arse shrimp!
