Hardy Fly Rods

I'm not much into fishing although that is changing a bit. Guy I know swears by the Hardy 8' #5 rod. Anybody use Hardy rods or have an opinion? Or was this dude trying to sell me an expensive rod?

I've never used one but Hardy makes a very good rod and reel.
What and where are you fishing?
8' is a little short for 95% of the type of fly fishing most will do. Standard is 9'.

Hardy is better known for excellent reels, but there really aren’t any bad rods. I would also choose a 9 foot . A 9’ 5 wt is an excellent first rod for freshwater trout. An 8 foot could be used for bass and there is no law about trout fishing with it. If you are thinking saltwater go a little heavier.

good rods but overpriced in my opinion. 8' is a bit of a niche rod...5 weight is pretty typical for most trout and will handle all but the biggest fresh water fish and most sane sized inshore saltwater fish, not bull reds and tarpon or even big snook but smaller reds and snook will be fine on a 5 weight. A baby tarpon would be a handfull.... It is about as good a balance between castability and forgiveness as you can get....4s will not tolerate inept casting and 3s take an expert to keep from snapping them in half....the same as you go up in size to so extent except it starts to show up in casting and not snapping the rod.

I’ve got a bunch of Hardy rods. Their one piece big fish sticks are the best in the business when it comes to durability. You can’t break them. I haven’t used any of their lower line weight or freshwater offerings.
I have Zephrus SWS in 4pc 6wt, 1pc 9wt, 1pc 10wt, 1pc 11wt, and 1pc 12wt.

Son says-
Two best rods right now IMO are the g Loomis Asquith and the Orvis Helios 4 (get the f not the d). Sage r8 is good too I just haven’t fished it. Douglas sky g is slightly cheaper. Orvis recon, Loomis IMX pro lamson velocity are all good mid priced rods. Douglas LRS is my favorite cheap rod.

Hardy is very bougie… I think they are made in England which is an even snootier layer
Ive thrown 4wt, 8wt, and 10wt Orvis Recons and have enjoyed them across the weights. I keep an eye out for lightly used Gen 1 Recons (Green blanks)
