Anyone ever lived in Las Vegas?

Specifically, Summerlin?
Seems like hot 2 months out of the year but still in 60s at night during those 2 months. Low humidity year-round.
Multiple TPC golf courses.
World class entertainment, restaurants, etc on LV Strip.
Lots of direct flights via Southwest.
Low property taxes compared to states like Texas.
Any experiences?

Interested in this thread as I’m set to move there with my family this summer. Getting stationed at Nellis to start work at the hospital there. Plan to live in Summerlin. A lot of the docs on base live there and I’ve heard it’s a great place to live.

I’ve lived in Vegas for several years now. Originally was going to give it two years but that has now turned into the better part of a decade. Like everywhere else, it is what you make it. Living out here has been good to my family and me. It definitely takes some getting used to but if you keep an open mind, it can actually be a rich experience.
Pros:
There is always something going on and you will have no shortage of visitors in town.
Relative to the rest of the US, it is a new city. That means a lot of the infrastructure is new (i.e smooth roads, plentiful community centers, tons of new neighborhood parks).
Crime is generally low especially in Summerlin. You have your normal stuff here and there (car break ins and whatnot) but it’s not rampant. I have felt safe my entire time living here.
Proximity to unique and wonderful nature. You have Red Rock Canyon in your backyard. Valley of Fire is only an hour away. You’re only three hours from Zion National Park, four hours from Los Angeles/beaches and no more than a two hour flight from anywhere in the western lower 48.
Food scene is good.
Increasing sports presence if that’s your thing.
Weather is great 9 months out of the year.
No state tax.
Cons:
For those 3 months in the summer, it can be pretty tough. I can say I’m still not fully used to it.
Public schooling is dismal if you have school aged children. As a result, private options run at a premium.
What you hear about it being a transient city is true. It seems like some people are only here for a cup of coffee. My wife and I have had many friends who have left and at times it feels like you’re always having to start over socially.
Overall for me, the pros outweigh the cons (at least for the time being). I probably won’t be here forever but I will continue to look for the positives as long as I am here. I have people who have made very nice lives for themselves out here.
Let me know if you have any other questions and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Been here 21 of 25 years. It’s hot for 3-4 months strait and doesn’t cool off at night for 2-3 of those.
Property tax is about 2k/year on a 500k house. No income taxes. If you like dry, the outdoors and relative close proximity to the mountains, it’s great. If you are prone to drink, drugs and gambling, you should think twice. The voters are not too bright. If you think Louisiana has bad politics, Nevada will ask you to hold its beer. I take a trip every quarter to get some humidity or some mountains. Maybe the Raiders will draft Nuss next year and give me a reason to be a fan.

I’ve been in Vegas for 14 years, the last 6 in Summerlin and I love it. If you’re gonna be stationed at Nellie’s I’d highly recommend Centennial Hills over Summerlin though. It’s basically Summerlin north and you’ll have a lot easier drive to Nellis.

Like you said, I’ve heard the public school system is rough in parts. My main reason for targeting Summerlin is the availability of good public schools. We only plan to be there for 4 years until our active duty commitments are done, which would correlate to 1st-5th grade for our oldest.

Are you at the empty nest phase of life or the child rearing phase of life? Curious if friends are met through kids activities or other.
From my experience, transient can be a positive in that new arrivals aren’t trying to break into established social circles.

Our children are not in school yet so I was talking about the DINK phase. From what I hear, people do meet through their kids school though

I lived in north Las Vegas for a few years and absolutely hated it.
Sure.. the strip was cool but after the new wears out and you have to actually live your normal life, Vegas sucked arse. I was counting the days down until leaving that place

Only poors live in Summerlin.
You need to check out Trophy Hills if you're a real OT baller.
I just moved from Moapa Valley, which is about 45 min north of Nellis. It's worth a look if you want a small town feel with better schools. It's still Clark county, but the teachers are all local and they care just a little bit more.

I haven’t, but have had a couple buddies move there and loved it.
The entertainment is there when you want it, but where people actually live you wouldn’t know it was there. Not sure now, but cost of living used to be low. Great golf courses.

For the current/former residents…if you could escape for the few hot months, would it change your opinions? I’m talking summer house somewhere else or extended stay in cooler climate.
