Tales From the Crypt

Old school HBO horror anthology series from the late 80s and early 90s. I used to watch it when I was a preteen and early teen. I’d love to rewatch episodes stored in my memory. My favorite one was about a convict who killed a cop in a desert who was handcuffed to him and was later killed by a bird. I wonder why Max would not allow this to be streamed. Anyone know?

Here’s what I found
quote:
Shudder: This streaming platform features the original 1970s movie "Tales from the Crypt".
Netflix: The original HBO series is available on Netflix.
Google Play: Season 1 of the series is available for purchase on Google Play.
YouTube: Some episodes of the series may be available for free on YouTube.
Amazon Prime Video: You can purchase Seasons 1-5 and potentially others on Amazon Prime Video.
Fandango at Home (Vudu): Fandango at Home (Vudu) offers the purchase of Season 1. Enjoyed.
Other Streaming Services: The 1972 film "Tales from the Crypt" is also available on various streaming services like Roku, Tubi, and Plex.

HBO can’t do anything with the Tales from the Crypt I.P. because the estate of William Gaines owns the copyright to the comics, the stories, the name Tales from the Crypt and the crypt keeper name. HBO owns the crypt keeper of the show (different likeness) but can’t call him the Crypt Keeper. The show had a few different producers Robert Zemeckis, Richard Donner (I assume his estate inherited the rights) and Joel Silver. The only way the show could get any kind of reboot or merchandising is if all parties agree to a contract. However it seems like the Gaines estate and Robert Zemeckis HATE Joel Silver with a passion. Joel Silver is a notorious a-hole and is the basis of Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman character in Tropic Thunder.
Basically we all have to wait for Joel Silver to die before we can get any closer to Tales from the Crypt to so much as stream on MAX.
edit - the gaines estate could always shop the rights to a reboot of the series, however as I mentioned the HBO Crypt Keeper wouldn't be a part of it. Considering the HBO crypt keeper is a pop culture icon i can see nobody would want to make a show without it. Total stalemate.

I don’t think HBO has the rights or at least not the full rights. There was a reboot in development a while back but it didn’t go anywhere because the rights are a mess
“Death of Some Saleman” with Tim Curry was a great episode

The whole series is available on YouTube. Uncensored. Nudity and all. I watched a few episodes a couple weeks ago.
They’re all collected on one page and set up in playlists. Don’t remember the account, but it’s probably pretty easy to find.

As a kid I thought they were really scary and a few are, but most of them are as much dark comedy as they are horror.
One notable recurring theme is that innocent people rarely had anything bad happen to them. The vast majority of the time it was evil/awful people who had it coming and bring it upon themselves.
Great show. Also frequent boobs.

Pevetohead is right IIRC in that the creative rights are a bit of a mess, but there could also be music rights issues.
Many older shows didn't have anything in their licensing of music for streaming (some didn't even include licensing for dvds or reruns) which means new negotiations and payments or substituting replacement music, which might not be cost effective.

The first time a show or movie almost made me cry as a kid was that episode about the abused girl who disappeared into a painting or some shite like that.

Loved that show. I can still hear the theme song in my head. For some reason the episode that stands out the most for me was the one where Danny Devito was dating a set of twins and at the end they saw him in half so each of them could have their own slice

Didn’t nbc used to air late Saturday night episodes? Maybe it’ll turn up on peacock one day.
