Family of 5: 45/45/19/16/12

My main concern is the layover times. Main two options we are looking at have layovers in Dallas(American) or Denver(United) and are each 1:05

Are either of these doable?

We will probably be towards the back of the arriving plane

Is it a domestic connection or international? If it's domestic, you should be fine with either. You can look at the on time performance of both flights to DFW and DEN and see what the average time both are late.

I think Denver has some runway construction going on. What time of day are both of these flights? Earlier in the day is usually better. Final destination? Depends if you want the longer flight first or second

Personal experience- I've had a bad streak of delays on AA recently. 2 hours to change a tire in Dallas, 2 hour delay for weather out of Florida, crew schedule delay out of Chicago for 2 hours for my last 3 flights.

United somehow always manages to get me where I need to on time, I just find an indifferent attitude from their employees. I also am not a fan of their tight legroom.

Everyone's experiences will vary

New Orleans to Denver to Glacier(Kalispell) - All United
8:15am
1:04 layover in Denver

New Orleans to Dallas to Glacier(Kalispell) - All American
5:24am
1:07 layover in Dallas

I've got some input based on those flights but just my opinions, feel free to choose the other

I'd take the United flight. Looks like they've got 4 flights a day to Kalispell vs only 2 a day from Dallas. Also, don't kill yourself waking up a family of 5 at 230am to catch a 5am flight. You'll be exhausted by the time you get there if you do that. Assuming the same price for both flights?

Thanks for the information!

We do not fly that often and when we do its always a direct flight and typically southwest!

I would prefer not to pay extra for seats and assume that we will be towards the back, but willing to pay if we have to help make the connection.

Hoping we can at least get 2 seats next to each other for my wife and youngest son.

If you book basic economy tickets, you do not get a free carry on for United but you do on American. You do not get to pick seats on a basic economy ticket. Make sure it's a normal economy ticket and not basic when booking on United. You should be able to pick seats with a regular economy ticket plus that carry-on. Are you going to check luggage?

Dallas resident here:

D/FW’s layout is sprawling and AA has a tendency to change gates frequently. You can end up in the furthest possible spot away and get to the gate only to discover they’ve changed it. Although probably shouldn’t be too bad that early in the morning.

Denver’s concourses are more compact and guide you to a central train whereas D/FW’s trains trace the outlines of the horseshoe terminals. Denver has traditional linear concourses and United has gates in only two concourses versus American having gates across five terminals at D/FW.

You’ll have an easier layover in Denver IMO.

I’m doing this same trip in July. Flying AA through Chicago on the way there with 0:55 layover and two young kids. Only 2 flights/day and we’re on the last.

I’m not stressed. You shouldn’t be stressed. Worst case, I make it there the next morning.

Hope is not a strategy. Pay to select their seats as soon as you book your ticket.
