Whitetail Public Land Hunting North Dakota

A buddy and I are looking at doing another different state with North Dakota being top of the list. (More so for scenery and a new experience than anything).
Seems like a pretty daunting task starting out with the different units/terrain types, etc. Also, the preference point/lottery is a bit vague on NDWLF website. Since this trip is a year+ out I'll buy a point to be safe.
Does anyone have any experience up there with units/PLOTS program/ hunting non posted private land, etc?
I can find spots with deer via onx just hoping for some advice, tips, etc.

No deer experience, but hunted ducks in ND tenish years ago. The PLOTS program up there was awesome. It was kind of like when we grew up hunting "the woods" where you only got in trouble if you were a dumbarse. Kind of mind blowing to see in recent times. I have heard it's not quite as free and open as it was when we were there. I will also say that all the people/farmers we spoke with were super nice and accommodating. One ol' boy couldn't believe we drove that for to shoot ducks. He told us "there's 3000 geese on one of my beans fields, eating 3#s of beans a pieice. Go get them out of there for me."

Hunters care a lot more about deer than birds in the Dakotas, expect a lot more competition for animals and access

They refer to Whitetails like Mule Deer
When they say "Aeey I got a nice 4 pointer" .
It's an 8 and usually a lot bigger than your average Louisiana deer
My neighbor is from up there so learned this first hand

I understand the desire for adventure, but you’ll be driving through better deer country to get there. Missouri is the best out of state destination for the bargain minded deer hunter.

Agree with MO for the bargain, I live in Kansas and have a small lease in NW MO, it's more so about the velvet hunt for me, combine that with the adventure and it's a no brainer.
