Trade later round picks for better picks

I was all about quantity during this draft, but I watched Mike Tripplet's review of the last 10 years of day 3 picks and it is a who's who of who is that guy? We have had our share of misses, but it is abysmal once you get past round 3. I know later picks are a dart throw, but you really only got Gardner-Johnson, Ellis and Rattler during that timeframe that are serviceable/playable.
- Pick 112 (4th) and 184 (6th) get you up to pick 90 (3rd)
- Pick 131 (4th) and 184 (6th) get you to pick 115 (4th)
This team needs young contributors, not guys that only have 1 NFL trait.

You’re seeing this happen more. The rams believe in trading high value picks for proven players or potential superstars stars. They then use an algorithm to presumably find better middle round talent than others.
You obviously saw the young jags gm do same thing coming from that camp as they have 4 picks in 3rd and early 4th round.
It’s great in theory but you have to hit on the middle rounders.

I prefer the shotgun approach in the Saints current talent and age situation. If we had a loaded roster, it makes more sense to trade up to target specific positions or even trade down to accumulate future picks.
There should be some good talent at RB and NT up through the 6th round, and likely some DT/DE tweener types that fit as DE’s in a 3-4.

I agree with Shotgun approach, I would just rather be closer to the target to make the shot. Again, take out the Colston, Streif, Bushrod, Armstead hits a decade ago and we literally have drafted 3 guys in the last 4 rounds that are servicable NFL players this decade.
We do way better with Undrafted FAs, so focus on that and get as many top 110 guys as you can get.

No, just dont wiff on your later round picks. Good value and talent even in the 7th round. Rams dont wiff and Detroit has built the team they have now with draft picks.

That’s true, but the late rounds are really where the scouting department should earn their money. The Saints have had one of the larger scouting departments in the league, going back to the early Payton days, and have no excuse to not pull some serviceable players in the late rounds, especially considering how depleted and aged the roster is.

This is what they have always done, IF there is someone that is in a pod of players that has fallen far past where expected, they will trade far up to get that player (Kamara being the prime example of this as we had a 2nd round grade on him and had tried for many picks to go get him before someone finally traded with us)
If a pod for that range starts dwindling quickly they try to trade up a few spots before the value drops. If the pod still has a decent amount of players for the range we will stay put.
If all current players are in pods graded below where they are picking they will try their best to trade back. Problem is if most teams have similar grades no one is going to want to trade.
I imagine practically all teams do pretty much this anyway.
