GM Fellas - Looking for some advice for my 6 year old son. He's taking a liking to shagging whiffle golf balls in the back yard and he's doing a really good job at making contact, keeping his head down, etc. I'm his biggest critic, don't get me wrong, and definitely not the type to think I have some young prodigy or something.

That said, I don't gold myself, I am more of a bike/run guy.

I only have one youth club that he's swinging, a 5 iron.

I'd like to get him some one on one lessons or something to a- see if he really likes it, will stick to it. and b - before springing money on a youth full set of clubs. Any reccs around the BR area for someone to check him out and give us some advice? Will I need to buy a full set clubs ahead of time?

Just went through a similar situation with my 6 year old son. He makes regular good contact with the ball. I, like you, dont think I have a PGA player on my hands but my son really likes golf.

I took him a couple weeks ago to a PGA Instructor to see if it was worth pursuing lessons at his age. My son hit the ball well and the instructor said to hold off for a few more years and continue doing what we do now.

I currently take him to play 9 holes once or twice a week, buy a hot dog and drink afterwards and continue to keep the experience fun. Even if you dont golf, you should be able to find a course that lets Jr's play in the afternoon. Just enjoy a nice walk with your son while he hits the ball around the course.

The instructor said he's to young to be thinking about his swing and how the swing works. He should just be having fun.

With regards to clubs, all my son has is a 3w, 7i, SW, Putter. Not a large investment at all. Think you can pick up similar sets at any sporting good/golf store under $200.

Get him US Kids Golf Clubs and keep them current to his height for as long as he plays. A great official intro to golf is Jr. Golf Camps, we do 4 at The Island in Plaquemine and most golf courses do. Make it fun and not regimented. If he want to put, go putt, if he wants to drive, go drive, if he wants to take a day off, do that!! Let him have fun and he'll be hooked for life!! Good Luck!!!

This is 100% correct. Get him a club that has a grip that will teach him a golf grip. Let him rip balls only when he wants. He’s got about 4/5 years before thinking about lessons.

Little camps are great, bc he can see other kids his age and learn to enjoy the game.

keeping his head down,

The head moves.

It does not move violently, but in a true swing the head moves.

I hear “keep your head down”, as advice to people all the time.

I think “swing the club head” while staying centered is a better concept for me.

No lessons yet, wait till around 10 or so. If I were you, I'd start playing so you can have fun learning with him. I play with my son, whose 18 and a Senior in high school, and it is the most fun thing I do. We have fun kidding each other and it's something you can do with him for the rest of your life. He's a 2 handicap and I'm a 10 so he beats me regularly so I give him a hard time when I play my best and beat him which is 1 out of every 10 or 15 rounds or so. He also has 2 hole in ones and I don't have any and I've been playing for 40 years.

As far a clubs are concerned, buy a Kid USA set of clubs. You can buy them online or at Edwin Watts. I would buy him ones with the grip that puts your hand in the somewhat correct spots. It looks like this and the club lengths and weight are done by height so measure him and buy accordingly.

At this point junior camps at pelican or the island would be the way to go for the summer. If he likes that look into getting him some 30 minute lessons. When he starts showing signs he can stay attentive.
Don't rush the learning process. You'll know when he can handle more.

U.S. kids set for height are perfect for him now.

Thanks for the advice, all. I'm going to look into ordering him a few clubs from US Kids Golf. Also my Wife and I are going to pick up the clubs again (we both have sets and used to play together when we were first dating), so will be a nice family affair.

I remember growing up and my mom would drop me off at the muni, give me 10 bucks and tell me to call when we are finished. I had several friends and we all would meet up on Saturday morning and play golf all day. I don't think I would have continued to play if it wasn't for my friends growing up. My father died when I was 12 but he was sick for over a year, so we only got to play a few times together. Get one or more of his friends involved in golf with him, makes for a better environment for him to enjoy the game. Good luck.
