Help me think patio idea through.

I have a front flower bed right by the entrance to my house. I have been contemplating turning it into a patio. It would require removing azaleas (I would likely transplant them to other areas in the yard) and forming the patio around these 2 huge crape myrtle trees. The front of the house faces north and is thusly shaded from the sun, the patio would function as our "front porch" of sorts.
Several thoughts.
1. The crape myrtles have grown up and over the roof because they are on the north side of the house - therefore they grew faster to get to the sun. This causes me to have to trim them back so they don't dump their junk onto the roof.
2. I have thought about cutting the crape myrtles down - planting Japanese Maples in their place.
3. The reason for removing all of the shrubbery is because it currently looks like my house is drowning in a jungle - and is also a mosquito paradise. We have quite a big front yard - that also is also fenced in with a picket fence, so the patio would still feel somewhat "private".
Am I crazy or does this sound like something feasible. FWIW I could take the crape myrtles out myself.

A patio in the front of your house seems like an odd idea. Just sayin

Normally yes I'd agree - but if you saw the house it wouldn't seem that strange. The yard is split with a picket fence in between the street and the house as well. It would be a quasi front porch. The house is also a bit of a weird house as it's a corner lot.

This. Can't say I've ever seen a house with a patio area out front.

Depends on the house I suppose. In Spanish style homes they often have basically front yards enclosed with adobe style fences.

Courtyards, and front porches are a pretty common thing.
Seems like taking an unused space and using it.
First issue I'd wonder about is the morning/evening sun, and which end of the day that you think you'd be using it, and go from there.
