Unearned runs?

The announcers said the two runs were unearned.

We had runners on 2nd & 3rd, no outs. How does an error to load the bases case the two runs to be unearned?

Because neither would have scored if that out is made as the rest of the inning plays out. Milam’s walk would load an empty base, Pearson’s K would have made it 2 outs, so Hernandez’s grounder would have retired the side instead of plating a run.

That’s not how that works. If that wouldn’t have happen how do you know the rest would have played out like that?

It’s how it works for scoring earned runs. Would people pitch/swing/play differently? Sure. But all we have to go on is what happened, so you score it AS IF the out was made.
