Why does the fed still fund so much money to universities?

I don't understand the rationale to it when US is in debt and the schools are all profitable on their own.
Wouldn't it be a good time to cut most of it and for Trump to say - with the changes to education department, we will be taking some of this university funds and dedicating it to the states to improve lower education? Even if half is cut out and half goes to lower.

Are you talking about research grants or other spend?
It’s a major distinction.

I'm with you, Why are we, the taxpayers, funding Ivy League schools. Here are the new endowments by school: Harvard ($53.2 billion), Yale ($42.3 billion), Princeton ($37.7 billion), UPENN ($20.5 billion), Columbia ($13.5 billion), Cornell ($10 billion), Dartmouth ($8.5 billion), and Brown ($6.9 billion). Let them fund their own research and development programs.

Many of these schools have billion dollar endowments as well.

I'd like to see university endowments come under more scrutiny. Many of these universities have multi-billion dollar endowments but are locked on the federal teat.
