I was out in the backyard yesterday (Prarieville,La), lo and behold a BW drake was hanging out with the resident mallards and woody. It wouldn’t follow the others onto my side of the fence line. My son and I spent the next hour just sitting on the back porch taking it all in.

They are beautiful this time of year.

I shot a stud full plum drake down South of Alexandria on the last day of the season quite a few years ago. I still regret not getting it mounted.

ETA: I should have clarified, last day of big duck season.

April is when I usually see a bunch of returning blue wings. Hope to get some behind the house this year.

Not a duck hunter. What is the "BW"?

I'm also have a pond and Prairieville and want to be on the look out. Mainly have mallards and occasional wood ducks.

During teal season and first part of big duck season they look like a hen.

As the season progresses they molt into their breeding plumage.

Maybe a squealer. They can be aggressive, watched one attack a Canada Goose

They sure don’t stay up north long. Head north in April & will be back in August.

Another interesting tidbit. Blue-winged teal are close cousins of the spoonbill. Look closely at the drake wings. That’s why I quit eating them!

I knew an outlaw from Golden Meadow that always shot his teal when they were Northbound. They come down around Leeville in droves.

I, too, know this outlaw of which you speak

I’ve never figured out why they take longer than other ducks to get their full plumage. I wish they looked like that all duck season
