I’m shocked that I couldn’t find a thread on this, unless everyone has given up the fight. I’m going to be moving from a small lot in StG to a much larger piece of rural property, when the house renovations are complete. The new (to me) property is between a slough and a creek on high ground, and is apparently ideally suited for fire ant colony’s. Does anyone have any tips for (attempting) to eradicate these? In my small yard, a combination of treating the occasional mound and Talstar has kept them mostly absent. I miss my days in the chemical plants were we could take home some great ant killers like trichloroethane. My yard at my first house should be on the Superfund list.

Any pointers appreciated.

Imidacloprid is a better option than bifenthrin. Do 2 or 3 applications 7-10 days apart and you won’t see fire ants for the rest of the year

This is a new one on me. Liquid or granules? Is this something Site 1 would have? Property is probably 1/2 acre in size (gf’s place)

I use liquid. It’s also great for fleas. I don’t know what Site 1 is but you can find it in Home Depot so I would assume so

For half acre, I'd use Talstar sand and spot treat.

I like to spot treat with Acephate (Ortho at Lowes). It stinks but it works fast.

fipronil is what most pest control services use for fire ants. 50 lb granules broadcast per 1/2 acre. done for the year

I have given up on completely ridding my yard of them. I can kill a mound only for another one pop up.
It is an endless battle.

Pro tip: nuke your whole yard once with talstar then in the future, keep a 10’ barrier around the yard along your property lines. They won’t cross it.

Acelepryn SC liquid insecticide. Kills about every insect in a yard. I use my FlowZone 4 gallon backpack sprayer and spray my entire yard with it.

I use liquid bifen in a 16 gallon tank sprayer with boomless nozzle and treat the whole yard. It is mounted on roll over bar on zero turn. The nozzle sprays about 20'-22' in width so it doesn't take long to spray 2 acres. In the link one of the videos showing the Kubota zero turn is mine, so you have an idea of how I set mine up and no I do not receive any compensation. When I bought from the owner at a sportsman show I explained how I was going to use it. He designed to attach to ATV or 4-wheeler and I would be the one of the first to use on z-turn. He asked that I send him a short video of how I attached it.

LINK

Avoid spraying flowers and cut the flowers off of clover as it will kill bees. I recommend for new users to do a second application 2-3 weeks after the first then every 3-4 months.
