There are more photos on my website, however, I none of the ones from Venice or Cades Cove are up yet. I'm still going through all of those photos, hopefully I'll get them up in the next week or two.

Taking a quick trip up to Montana/North Yellowstone at the end of this month. Hoping to catch the male brown bears coming out of hibernation and wolves feeding on carcasses while I'm out there.

I didn't realize that he had a fish until I was able to get the photo on my computer.

Mr. Joseph, can you spare a recommendation for a good wildlife lens sub $1200? My guy loves outdoor photography and captures ‘good’ moments; however, the quality just isn’t there due to limited lens ability in my opinion. It’s amateur photography that we enjoy hanging around our home/camp, but I feel it could really come up a level with the proper tools. His birthday is coming up, and I want to splurge on a lens. Yet, I don’t know where to start. Any help would be appreciated! I do know he uses a Nikon D5200 for whatever that’s worth.

A Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED AF-S VR seems like a pretty highly rated lens for wildlife photography.

Edit to say JoJo those are great photos as always.

I want to preface that by saying I don’t know anything about Nikon lenses. I use Canon stuff but I run into a lot of people that use that particular lens and they all seem to like it. Also nothing wrong with looking at sites like B&H photography or Adorama in their used lens sections for a particular lens.

10-4, I haven’t really thought of the used market but will take it into consideration. I’ve heard him mention wanting a ‘fish eye’ lens eventually; I’m ignorant of their use/versatility. It sounds rather specific. So I might go the used route on that purchase. Again, I appreciate the input.

I’d definitely go with the Nikon 200-500. I used to use it before switching to mirrorless and loved that lens.
It’s a great lens for wildlife, and tight landscape shots. If you want something a little more versatile you may want to look at the 70-200 f/2.8. It won’t have the reach for some wildlife shots, but it gives you a a broader range of different types of photography. The 70-200 is gonna cost a little more, but you can probably get it used from MPB for a good price.

Of all you want is something for wildlife I’d definitely go with the 200-500mm

I appreciate the recommendation sir! I’m definitely going to pull the trigger on the 200-500! His passion is the wildlife but loves landscapes as well. I’m gonna save the 70-200 for Christmas. Reading between the lines, those two options should cover his bases considering his skill level I think. Thank you for the response.

I actually have a few duck photos that I’ll be adding to my website soon.

The Tensas River NWR is full of wood ducks right now
