My kid is getting braces today and he needs a mouth guard for BJJ. Doc wants to sell me one for $75. Says the heated ones can stick to the braces but we can use a generic one. That’s prolly not gonna fly. Nothing worse than a shitty mouth guard cutting off you breathing while somebody else is trying to do the same. I’m cool with the $75 but i don’t wanna be replacing the thing every month as his teeth shift.

Question: I’m sure plenty of yall have kids in sports & have braces. What do yall use?

My son wrestles and does BJJ. Has had braces a while and always complained about the Ortho mouth piece and all the others we tried. Got him a Bulletproof one and he loves it. Can breathe easier, drink, and talk!

I ordered off Amazon

Apologies for being a zealot, but, have you considered a palate expander instead?

The root issue is that most people have undeveloped jaws, and their teeth are crooked because there isn’t enough room for them. A palate expander will slowly expand the jaw to the correct size eliminating any need for extractions.

There are a lot of downstream health issues that come from an undersized jaw, and it’s everything from sleep apnea to immune system dysfunction

In the most serious cases, people will have deeply recessed lower jaws, they’ll appear chinless, and their faces will be very asymmetrical

Well not until the random TD poster just informed me of the dangers. Now I’m rethinking everything

Braces are the standard paradigm, it’s what almost everyone does, it’s what I had as a child, and I’m just some random dude

but ….

Do a internet search, you should be able to find plenty of people talking about them

My kid does bjj with braces as well. Never had any issues with the teeth or braces in class though, knock on wood.
I got a Shock Doctor for the braces but the kid refuses to wear it.

Expanders are usually only a portion of orthodontic treatment to include braces as well. You don’t often see someone in an expander without getting braces applied immediately after the expander is removed. Some kids might even have both at the same time.

I used an expander as an adult, I found it profoundly beneficial. Huge believer in them

Get a box of Efferdent to clean any of the guards you get. The amount of people that run that shite under warm water and think it's cool is amazing. Especially with braces, he doesn't need the mouthguard to be a bacteria/schmutz "bank." I won't mention the disgusting shite that boys tend to start doing with mouthguards and cups at that age, but Efferdent is cheap and effective.

SISU Max

But, honestly, $75 for a custom dentist mouthguard is CHEAP.
