Today's arse whipping they are receiving is game 50 for the season.
Luka missed 28 games.
Lively missed 18 games.
Irving missed 11 games.
Washington missed 8 games.
Klay missed 7 games.
Gafford missed 3 games.
These 6 guys are the core of the team. This is basically your 5 starters, considering that Lively and Gafford have rotated who starts and almost split the minutes 50/50 when they are both available. They are 12-3 when these 6 are on the court.
Game 1 vs San Antonio (W)
Game 2 vs Phoenix (L)
Game 3 vs Utah (W)
Game 4 vs Minnesota (W)
Game 5 vs Houston (L)
Game 6 vs Orlando (W)
Game 14 vs San Antonio (W)
Game 16 vs New Orleans (W)
Game 22 vs Portland (W)
Game 23 vs Memphis (W)
Game 24 vs Washington (W)
Game 25 vs Toronto (W)
Game 27 vs Golden State (W)
Game 30 vs Portland (W)
Game 31 vs Minnesota (L) -- This is the game where Luka got hurt in the 2nd quarter on Christmas day and hasn't played since. They were 20-11 at the time. They are now 26-24 (6-13 since Luka has been out).
Not to mention that other role players have also missed a crazy amount of games...Exum 48, Kleber 18, Powell 17, Marshall 13, Hardy 11.
All Dallas had to do was be patient and let everybody get healthy again. The was a really, really good team and was put together almost perfectly to thrive around Luka and Kyrie. Luka gets hurt, team starts to snowball and suck for a month, management overreacts and makes one of the craziest trades of all time.

Game 1 post-Luka (now granted the only starter Dallas even played for some reason was Klay) ends with a score of 101-144. Was 91-46 at halftime. Took a 3 in the last minute of the game for Dallas to hit 100, and Cleveland had the 3rd string in bullshitting for the entire 2nd half.

This wasn't going to happen is the problem. Now, the fact that they traded for another guy with the same issue is what makes it make no sense.

23/24 - 70 games averaging 37.5 minutes per game plus 22 playoff games averaging 40.9 minutes per game.
22/23 - 66 games averaging 36.3 minutes per game.
21/22 - 65 games averaging 35.4 minutes per game plus 15 playoff games averaging 36.8 minutes per game.
So over the course of 3 years he has played 238 games and averaged over 36 minutes per game during that time.
Just a heads up, there's only 2 NBA players averaging over 36 minutes per game right now...Tyrese Maxey and Damian Lillard. Those players have missed 10 and 9 games this year, which puts them about on pace to play the same number of games (or less) compared to Luka the last three years.
So basically what I'm getting at, is Luka has been playing right there for the most minutes of any player in the league, while "not being in shape" and dragging some shitty rosters to wins the last three years. This year, they finally have the correct roster built around him, and he has the worst injury luck he's had his entire career. When healthy, he is a winner, and other than this month long injury he's currently missing for, he has pretty much played the same amount of or more games than all the other stars in the modern era while playing heavier minutes.

management overreacts
I think Nico was told by ownership that they weren't going to sign Luka to a supermax deal, and that - unlike under Cuban's ownership - they weren't going to go pay any luxury tax. So, he "maliciously complies" by making the worst possible deal he could get through ownership (probably tells a sob story about how nobody wants a player with his injury history, his history of racking up technical fouls, etc.).

I'm pretty sure I read a Nico quote somewhere that LA was the only team he even reached out to.

They are 12-3 when these 6 are on the court
I mean it’s not like the Mavs suck but how many other teams would also go 12-3 (or close) against that slate with their top 6 available? It wouldn’t be that exclusive a list. And surely a decent number of those 12 didn’t have their top 6 when they played them, how are we adjusting for that?
You are what your record says you are, not what you are when everything’s perfect. 9th in the West feels perfectly appropriate

I read that too. And that's because he's friends with their GM. So, make a "deal" with your friend, then tell your boss "that's the best I could do" with a bunch of excuses thrown in (injury issues, propensity for technical fouls), and since all your boss (seemingly) cares about is cutting payroll, you're in the clear.
